Review: This book was recommended somewhere as a beloved children's classic - unfortunately I can't remember where - but I have to stay I'm astonished it's still in print. The main story is about a father who is insensitive, his friend who tries to bring him to God, his daughter who falls mortally ill in a very "sexy white wasting away" when her cat dies, a plain-but-beautiful witchy woman in the woods who can heal animals etc. So when the father and the woman fall in love, the girl is fine again and the cat comes back. In between is an incredibly racist side plot about gypsies, who are throughout and elaborately described as dirty, sadistically hurting and starving their animals, trying to cheat and still, and finally behaving as murderous savages. Its main purpose is to create some decisive drama for the plot, but it is REALLY really bad.
