Review: A real treasure. Excellent commentary on a subject that is still largely unexplored in the West. The book is illustrated with superb photographs and images from Tibetan sources.

Review: What I appreciate most about this book, is that it comes from the field rather than a scholar without an ounce of experience with these practices. This book is a window into the practices surrounding what is commonly known as "The Six Yogas of Naropa" FOR THOSE EXPECTING AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL - THIS IS NOT IT That can be found elsewhere. But if you are lucky enough to be familiar with these practices, and have had experience with authentic training from yogins & yoginis in this region, you will appreciate the depth of knowledge and diversity of practice and experience that this book illustrates. It is a beautiful book, as all Ian's books are: they are works of art - full of visual beauty as well as knowledge/information. If you are curious about the yoga culture on the northern side of the Himalayas, you will love the detail this book provides. If you are a seasoned scholar, you will not find erudite analysis here - in fact a few times I was frustrated with the lack of Sanskrit/Tibetan references to texts - but I keep in mind, that this man spent more time with direct oral transmission - working one-on-one with some of the most amazing yogis of this century. Personally, I think this is more valuable, as texts alone do not create the depth of insight one receives from a master. This does not mean this book has no scholarly value, on the contrary, it is precisely because it is not from a textual position that this book is so valuable. The author does not hide his own opinion on topics that are sometimes controversial in the Yogi's world, and the views expressed visually and in print, give one who is willing to look closely, a better understanding of the dynamics at play with these ancient practices as they move into the limelight of the modern yoga world. Very happy to have this on my shelf and look forward to his next book eagerly.
