Description: This book helps second language teachers use theories in their practice, exploring in concrete and practical ways the intersections between teachers, learners, and institutions, and theories of teaching, theories of learning, and theories of language. These intersections provide language teachers with critical insights on how to deal with professional complexities and practical guidance on how to develop appropriate pedagogical practice. By focusing on theories of teaching, the authors give readers the tools to create a clear image of the kind of teacher they wish to be. By exploring theories of learning, they promote the formation of teachers' personal theories which allow them to identify their own areas of special interest in learner achievement and enrichment. By examining theories of language, the book shows how administrators and teachers can use theories to identify course goals and plan priorities for class time. Using Theories for Second Language Teaching and Learning treats theory as a concept in its own right and promotes knowing theory as a means of teacher discovery, reflection, and learning through case studies, which are descriptions and analyses of teachers thinking and acting in classrooms and in the institutions in which they work. Every chapter presents case studies with examples from the teaching of different languages, including Chinese, English, French, German, and Korean. An array of theories from multiple disciplines are featured and reflective projects are offered that lead readers to discover the importance and role of theory in daily professional life.

Description: The Practice of English Language Teaching is an essential guide for teachers of English. It explains current pedagogy to teachers who want to access the most relevant ELT practices and incorporate them into their lessons. The Practice of English Language Teaching includes: English as a world language Theories of language and language learning Learner characteristics which influence teacher decisions Guidance on managing learning Teaching language systems (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) Teaching language skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading) Practical teaching ideas The role of technology (old and new) in the classroom Assessment for language learning in the digital age About the accompanying DVD which runs for 3 hours For the fifth edition of The Practice of English Language Teaching, we decided to take a film crew out to see what English language lessons look like in different places, in different situations and, crucially, with different age groups. And so we asked a number of teachers if they would let us film them at work, doing one of their 'normal' lessons. With that in mind, we went to Ankara in Turkey and filmed two teachers, Asli Niluefer Usluel and Emel Atasoy, working with young learners. In the UK, we filmed at a residential summer school in the city of Oxford. Varinder Unlu and John Duthie taught teenagers from a variety of different countries and different language backgrounds. Back in Turkey, we had the chance to record lessons (taught by Zeynep Bueyuektuna and Çigdem Özen) for adult Turkish students who were getting ready to study at an English-medium university. In Mexico, at a private language school, we had the good fortune to film teachers Juan Pablo Monfón Jiménez, Ricardo Fajardo Cortés and Araceli Menchaca Sánchez with their adult Mexican students. In each case, after the lesson, I was able to interview the teachers on camera so that I could ask them about their lessons and about the issues that came up as a result of their teaching choices. Description: Crista Hazell's Independent Thinking on MFL: How to make modern foreign language teaching exciting, inclusive and relevant takes teachers on a tour of how to get the teaching of a new language right. Foreword by Ian Gilbert. Learning a new language has the power to transform a life, as well as help break down the barriers that seem to be re-emerging between nations, cultures and people. In the UK, MFL teaching has always had to battle with the 'everyone speaks English' argument, not to mention that, for so many, all that remains of their years learning a foreign language is bitte, por favor or s'il vous plait. But with teachers like Independent Thinking Associate Crista Hazell at the front of the class, things can be very different. Drawing on her many years of experience as an MFL teacher and head of department, Crista shares tips, techniques and inspirational ideas geared to help teachers build confidence, increase enjoyment and improve outcomes as they take their MFL teaching to a whole new level. Crista provides a range of strategies from how to hook students in the minute they enter the classroom to ensuring that the vocabulary sticks designed to help learners develop confidence, take risks and enjoy the challenge that learning a new language brings. She also offers ideas and advice on how to make learning new vocabulary and grammar a great deal more effective and empowers teachers to open up the benefits and enjoyment of learning a language to all students, not just those in the top sets. Ultimately, however, her book sets out to help teachers create engaging, relevant and memorable learning experiences in the MFL classroom and encourage their learners to become lifelong and passionate linguists. For MFL teachers and heads of languages departments in primary schools, secondary schools and colleges. Independent Thinking on MFL has been shortlisted for the Educational Book Award in the 2021 Education Resources Awards!.
