Review: This is the first time I have ever consulted a work by Sevcik, though he is one of the long-established masters of the violin and of violin studies. The book concentrates on changes of position and scalic work, and is formulated along the lines of setting up in each numbered study a certain finger pattern of one bar in length which the student masters and repeats both in every position and every key signature. There is no doubt that assiduous study using this method would help you to perfect a formidable technique, but the experience would not be a very musical one. I think Sevcik's approach must have been considered very thorough and "scientific" in its heyday, but in recent years I think most students and teachers would prefer using studies that are more based on melodic and musical lines that nonetheless still get across all the grounding needed in employing techniques in these areas. In short, the work only gets three stars in my book because I feel that a violin student could quite happily miss out on any of Sevcik's studies and still be none the worse for basing their technical studies on the plenty of alternatives that are available.
