Review: I suppose to start this off with I’ve always been a fan witches, mages and the sorts so naturally I - a person whom typically reads shonen and seinen manga - was drawn to this series. It serves as a collection of short stories where our protagonist - Elania - journeys through this world. Her stories take her to places all over, places where mages soar through the skies, places where wild flower fields kill anyone whom steps foot. It’s a mixed bag, of cute, funny, wholesome and dark tales. This generally serves as a nice breath of fresh air from the standard linear story telling which frequents the market nowadays. Elania herself is a change of pace to our usual protagonists, she’s not a selfless heroine whom strives to make the world better, she’s not got a goal in mind to save lives. She’s a traveller whom wants to experience new things and if that means conning an entire nation to make them believe she can tell the future, well that’s just that. It was an excellent read with cute illustrations sprinkled through, it’s certainly worth a read for anyone interested in witches and such. Suitable for most ages I’d recommend.

Review: This book follows the formula of Kino's Journey, a light novel series that had two good anime adaptations. Like Kino, Elaina is a traveler who wanders from place to place where each place has its quirks and some story unfolds. In Kino's stories the people met had some depth and the stories had emotional weight. I never felt that in this book. It was more like very dry fairy tales without any particular moral or lesson, things just happen then they end. Kino was an interesting character with a back story, continuity, purpose and growth. Elaina just exists, wandering because she wanders with no goal, purpose, nothing. She doesn't seem to care much about the quirks of the places she visits, it's almost like a job she's taken to pay the rent. Except she has no employer, and no one is making her do something she doesn't seem to enjoy.
