Description: DI Clare Mackay starts the new year with a death. It is the stroke of midnight on Hogmanay when Alison Reid admits a caller to her home. When her death is later reported, DI Clare Mackay attends the scene. The initial evidence does not rule out murder, but it's not possible to say for certain if foul play was involved. Yet when the pathologist informs Clare about a post mortem of a young woman found in the Kinness Burn, and with some similarities to Alison's case, it seems there's a strong chance that there's a killer on the loose in St Andrews. Clare and her team will have to look past the obvious conclusions and delve deeper into the lives of the victims to get to the truth. But who else risks meeting the same fate while the clock is ticking? Review: Really enjoy this series of novels. Well written and the "regular" characters have depth and you become invested in them Detective Clare Mackay leads her team on the hunt for a serial killer but there's lots of twists and turns and several red herrings before the killer is finally unmasked. As for her love life, it's a total disaster, but we are rooting for her! Highly recommend.

Review: I have read the previous books in the series but I won't bother with the next one. It should really be titled "What she thought they knew"; a book that I worked out "who done it" well before the end. You'll see what I mean if you get that far. DI Clare Mackay is in charge of an investigation into a serial killer in a snow-bound St Andrews. Something that should require her full attention; but she takes the afternoon off right in the middle of the investigation to go home and walk her dog! I can't see DI Banks or Rebus doing that. A serial killer in a place like St Andrews would have the full scrutiny of the press so disappearing for the afternoon just wasn't credible. There is far too much filler of Clare driving home, driving to a victim's house, driving to work down this road and that road. Now I used to work in St Andrews and know it quite well, but after a while the constant name checks of different roads became tedious. And why name all the roads and then use fictional names for all the shops and bars in town, its not consistent. There are a couple of bits which should really have been picked up by a proof reader: (1) Clare drives her pride and joy, a Mercedes, but is pleased by the "welcome sight of a gritter lorry" coming down the road. Really? and (2) she mentions to the desk sergeant how dangerous (slipery) the police station car park is but later she and her colleage "run back across" the car park. Picky I know, but such errors jar and ruin the flow. At the end I was left trying to decide whether this was a police procedural, crime, romance (a lot is taken up with Clare's love life) or drama; I just think everything needs to be a lot tighter.
