Review: enjoyable and thought provoking first book - interesting insight into a possible future!!

Review: Repellent. What seems initially like a merely overly-gentle exploration of economic meltdown, resulting in a "Little House on the Prairie" type existence, turns out to be a deeply unpleasant exploration of the author's personal limitations. This is a world made by the arrogance of a (presumably elderly) American white male. How right it is, the protagonist muses, that women no longer want to be part of government but have returned to keeping house - and, gosh, sharing his bed for personal protection, in the case of a young widow whose husband he "heroically" fails to save from a fire. There are a few black people over the hill, he ponders, but they have always kept to themselves, saving the locality from the race riots afflicting the cities. As if women and people of colour would have anything to contribute beyond his own archaic prejudices anyway! Thank goodness he has become mayor, after some lumbering plot devices and ridiculous fawning from the other characters, who are sadly flawed in ways he simply is not. Wish-fulfillment of the most childish kind that would be mildly amusing - had this kind of vile stupidity not been a historical indicator of fascism - and the writing so incredibly soporific and plodding.

Description: Janet Shirley was always impressed by her husband. Even before he began using his special talent to change their lives beyond recognition. The thing is, Janet doesn't want their lives to change that much - she's quite happy, working at the supermarket, cooking for Howard three times a day, watching quiz shows in the evening. But once Howard unleashes his photographic brain on the world, the once modest used-car salesman can't seem to stop. And what he sees as the logical conclusion isn't something Janet can agree to. She will not consent to Howard's grand gesture. Written out of Burgess' disgust at western decadence and degradation, One Hand Clapping casts a jaded eye over our values, drawing a conclusion that still resonates fifty years on.

Description: 'A tour de force of luminous writing.' Mark Cocker, Spectator In 1976 James Crowden left his career in the British army and travelled to Ladakh in the Northern Himalaya, one of the most remote parts of the world. The Frozen River is his extraordinary account of the time he spent there, living alongside the Zangskari people, before the arrival of roads and mass tourism. James immerses himself in the Zangskari way of life, where meditation and week-long mountain festivals go hand in hand, and silence and solitude are the hallmarks of existence. When butter traders invite James on their journey down the frozen river Leh, he soon realises that this way of living, unchanged for centuries, comes with a very human cost. In lyrical prose, James captures a crucial moment in time for this Himalayan community. A moment in which their Buddhist practices and traditions are in flux, and the economic pull of a world beyond their valley is increasingly difficult to ignore.

Description: With an introduction by James Naughtie. Take a Valium. Have a party. Go on a demo. Shoot a soldier. Make a bang. Bed a friend. That's your problem-solving system. But haven't we tried all that? Howard Kirk, product of the Swinging Sixties, radical university lecturer, and one half of a very modern marriage, is throwing a party. The night will have all sorts of repercussions: for Henry Beamish, Howard's desperate and easily neglected friend, and for Howard's wife Barbara, promiscuous '70s liberal and exhausted victim of motherhood. The History Man is Malcolm Bradbury's masterpiece, the definitive campus novel and one of the most influential novels of the 1970s. Funny, disconcerting and provocative, Bradbury brilliantly satirizes a world of academic power struggles as his anti-hero seduces his away around campus. But beneath the surface is an altogether more affecting portrait: it reveals a marriage in crisis and demonstrates the fragility of the human heart.

  • Waterstones My James

    Price: £9.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This Sunday Times top ten bestseller is a heartfelt account of his son's murder and his fight for justice by Ralph Bulger. James Bulger was just a few weeks shy of his third birthday when, on 12 February 1993, he wandered away from his mum Denise in a shopping mall in Bootle. Grainy images from a security camera showed him trustingly holding the hand of ten-year-old Jon Venables as they walked away. Venables and his friend Robert Thompson murdered James, in a crime that shocked the world. In this haunting book, James' father Ralph Bulger describes how his world fell apart in the days that followed. In his darkest hours he drank to numb the pain, and the stress tore his marriage apart. He tells how he learned to cope with his grief, but the sorrow of James' death has never left him. In My James he discusses the long legal battle to see justice for his son. Above all, he pays tribute to his son, an adorable, cheeky boy whose bright smile brought joy to his family's lives.
