A Week At The Airport

Category: Aircraft
Description: In the summer of 2009, Alain de Botton will be invited by the owners of Heathrow airport to become their first ever Writer in Residence. He will be installed in the middle of Terminal 5 on a raised platform with a laptop connected to screens, enabling passengers to see what he is writing and to come and share their stories. He will meet travellers from around the world, and will be given unprecedented access to wander the airport and speak with everyone from window cleaners and baggage handlers to air traffic controllers and cabin crew. Working with the renowned documentary photographer Richard Baker, de Botton will produce an extraordinary meditation upon the nature of place, time, and our daily lives. He will explore the magical and the mundane, personal and collective experiences and the interactions of travellers and workers all over this familiar but mysterious site. Like all airports, Heathrow (the 15th century village of Heath Row lies beneath the short stay car park) is a 'non-place' that we by definition want to leave, but it also provides a window into many worlds - through the thousands of people it dispatches every day. A Week at the Airport is sure to delight de Botton's large following, and anyone interested in the stories behind the way we live.

Fly By Wire

Category: Aircraft
Description: On January 15, 2009, a US Airways Airbus A320 had just taken off from La Guardia Airport in New York, when a flock of Canada geese collided with it, destroying both of its engines. Over the next three minutes, the plane's pilot Chelsey ' Sully' Sullenberger, managed to glide to a safe landing in the Hudson River. It was an instant media sensation, the ' The Miracle on the Hudson', and Captain Sully was the hero. But, how much of the success of this dramatic landing can actually be credited to the genius of the pilot? To what extent is the ' Miracle on the Hudson' the result of extraordinary o but not widely known, and in some cases quite controversial o advances in aviation and computer technology over the last twenty years? From the testing laboratories where engineers struggle to build a jet engine that can systematically resist bird attacks, through the creation of the A320 in France, to the political and social forces that have sought to minimize the impact of the revolutionary fly-by-wire technology, William Langewiesche assembles the untold stories necessary to truly understand ' The Miracle on the Hudson', and makes us question our assumptions about human beings in modern aviation.

Description: If your idea of a 'strange' aircraft is the pre-war DH Dragon Rapide, a bloated Boeing Super Guppy or a BA Airbus with an 'ethnic' tail design, then think again. What about Horatio Phillips' Multiplane with its 200 separate wings? Or the Hughes H-4 Hercules, the plane with the longest wingspan ever, which was made entirely from plywood? And who could forget the Caspian Sea Monster - a ten-engine, 550,000kg giant designed to fly at 500kph at a mindboggling altitude of just 4m? Exploring the strangest aircraft ever conceived, Keith Ray reveals the madness of many a designer and marketing guru in this highly entertaining homage to some of the aviation world's more bizarre aircraft.

Description: A pioneering aviator and advocate of women's equality, Amelia Earhart was, and continues to be, an inspiration to people the world over. Her fierce determination to break records and push the boundaries of aviation led her to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, as well as the first person (man or woman) to fly solo the trans- Pacific flight from Hawaii to California in 1935. Not content to leave it at that, Amelia set her sights on becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the world, but her brave attempt was cut short when she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, vanished over the Pacific Ocean on the final stretch of the challenge in 1937. Eighty years on and our fascination with Amelia Earhart continues. Here, Mike Roussel charts her life and experiences, exploring the investigations and theories surrounding her mysterious disappearance and revealing the naturally courageous spirit that made her one of the most daring of twentieth-century women.

Tales Of Lancasters And Other Aircraft

Category: Aircraft
Description: Of every 100 operational airmen in the Second World War, nearly seven were killed flying in England and more than three severely injured in crashes. With a total of 12,398, the number of non-operational casualties was significant. Operational casualties were of course chillingly grim - over 56,000 airmen died in the war. George Culling was a 19-year-old Lancaster navigator whose own experiences often involved battling tricky and dangerous conditions. Fascinated by the ever-present dangers for airmen even well away from combat, he has collated tales from comrades and combined them with his own to preserve some of the unexpected, inconvenient, dangerous, and often downright bizarre experiences that frequently typified daily life for airmen in the Second World War.

Magnify The Wright Brothers

The Wright Brothers

Category: Aircraft
Description: On a winter day in 1903, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, two unknown brothers from Ohio changed history. But it would take the world some time to believe what had happened: the age of flight had begun, with the first heavier-than-air, powered machine carrying a pilot. Who were these men and how was it that they achieved what they did? David Mc Cullough, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, tells the surprising, profoundly human story of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Far more than a couple of unschooled Dayton bicycle mechanics who happened to hit on success, they were men of exceptional courage and determination, and of far-ranging intellectual interests and ceaseless curiosity, much of which they attributed to their upbringing. In this thrilling book, Mc Cullough draws on the immense riches of the Wright Papers, including private diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, and more than a thousand letters from private family correspondence to tell the human side of the Wright Brothers' story, including the little-known contributions of their sister, Katharine, without whom things might well have gone differently for them.

Magnify Teach Yourself To Fly
Teach Yourself To Fly

Teach Yourself To Fly

Category: Aircraft
Description: First published in 1938, Teach Yourself To Fly was not only one of the very first Teach Yourself books to be published but the first to actually change the world. It was used on the eve of the second world war to prepare pilot recruits and conscripts before they were called for service, and as such it was read religiously by thousands of young men, some as young as 17, and directly impacted on the British war effort. This beautiful new printing of the book captures all of the feelings of that extraordinary time - it's nostalgic, understated, inspiring and very British indeed, warning young pilots, amongst other things, not to feel 'too discouraged' in the event of a crash landing. Technology has changed hugely, but the principles of aviation as they were in the middle of the twentieth century are perfectly summarised in this lovely book. Get hold of the right vehicle, and it really can teach you to fly. What happens when you're up there, however, is your responsibility. Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

The Hurricane Pocket Manual

Category: Aircraft
Description: The Hawker Hurricane was a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was designed and predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd for the RAF. Although overshadowed by the Spitfire, during the Battle of Britain the Hurricane accounted for 60% of the RAF's air victories in the battle, and served in all the major theatres of the Second World War. The 1930s design evolved through several versions and adaptations, resulting in a series of aircraft that acted as interceptor-fighters, fighter-bombers (also called ' Hurribombers'), and ground support aircraft. Further versions known as the Sea Hurricane had modifications that enabled operation from ships. Some were converted as catapult-launched convoy escorts, known as ' Hurricats'. More than 14,583 Hurricanes were built by the end of 1944 (including at least 800 converted to Sea Hurricanes and some 1,400 built in Canada. The book collates a variety of pamphlets and manuals on the plane that were produced throughout the war for the benefit of pilots and others associated with the aircraft.

The Lancaster Bomber Pocket Manual

Category: Aircraft
Description: The Avro Lancaster was the RAF's most famous and successful heavy bomber of the Second World War. Used predominantly at night, ' Lancs' dropped 608,612 tons of bombs in 156,000 sorties in the period 1942-1945. Some of these missions were incredibly daring - notably the 'dambusters' raid of 617 squadron on the Ruhr valley dams in May 1943. The success of such operations was testament both to the rugged, reliable qualities of this amazing aircraft and the bravery and skill of the pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers and gunners that crewed it. They relied on their training and experience, supplemented by various pamphlets and manuals that were produced throughout the war. Supplemented with illustrative plans and diagrams, this fascinating pocket manual provides a unique insight into the wartime operation of this famous aircraft.

British Military Jets

Category: Aircraft
Description: The end of the Second World War provided little rest for air forces and the aircraft industry. Both sides now had to put enormous energy into research and development to gain an edge. For the British aircraft industry it meant producing aircraft quickly, and on tight budgets: for Bomber Command to carry Britain's new nuclear deterrent, and for Fighter Command to defend the country. This book examines the RAF's British-made combat jet aircraft of this turbulent and frightening period, up to the cancellation of TSR-2 and the end of the British aircraft industry as it then was. The great names, Hunter, Vulcan, Lightning, Harrier, are considered alongside less well known types, and the story of each key aircraft is told from development to operational use. This book is part of the Britain's Heritage series, which provides definitive introductions to the riches of Britain's past, and is the perfect way to get acquainted with British military jets in all their variety.

Classic Aircraft

Category: Aircraft
Description: Aircraft have revolutionized the way we live. Billions of passengers take to the air every year and around the world airlines operate almost 80,000 flights daily. Before the revolution, flying was, as often as not, a personal struggle in which a lone pilot and his single-engine aircraft tangled with the elements, the limits of his own endurance and the uncertainties of technology. Many of the endeavors of the early aviation pioneers ended in heroic failure. Quite a few of the aircraft pictured in this unique collection of the world's classic aircraft met the same fate. The photos, many of which have never been published, tell the story of civil aviation; illustrating how quickly aircraft design developed and how radically things changed from the early days of balloon flight through to supersonic travel. As aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky said, Aeronautics was neither an industry nor a science. It was a miracle.

Reach For The Skies

Reach For The Skies

Category: Aircraft
Description: As far back as stories go, pioneers have reached for the skies. In the last two hundred years, they have mastered the air and made the modern world possible. Today they are bringing outer space within our reach. They're inventors and toymakers, amateurs and adventurers, visionaries, dreamers and, yes, crackpots. Some have called them irresponsible, even dangerous. But Richard Branson has met many of them. He has worked with them, funded them, and flown with them. He admires them, and trusts them, and thinks they and their kind are our future. In this book Richard Branson looks at the history of flight through the stories and people who have inspired him throughout his life. In these pages you will find tales of miraculous rescues; of records made and broken; of surprising feats of endurance and survival, including some of his own adventures, as well as developments in the future of air (and space) travel. It is a story of pioneers, and of course it includes the world famous Montgolfiers and the Wright brothers, but he also wants to describe some of the lesser-known trailblazers. People like Tony Jannus, who in 1914 created the first scheduled commercial flight in the world, flying his passengers over the waters of Tampa Bay at an altitude of just fifty feet! The 'bird man' Leo Valentin, who in the 1950s jumped from 9,000 feet with wooden wings attached to his shoulders. And Branson's friend Steve Fossett, who dedicated his life to breaking records and having adventures. This is their story. It is also, in a small way, his own.

The Sr-71 Blackbird Story

Description: Perhaps no other aircraft in aviation history has been such a well-kept secret as the United States' Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. This cutting-edge aircraft took the art of aerial spying to an unprecedented level and did it all from highly clandestine high-speed spy missions over Communist nations during the late 1960s and 1970s. With the help of breath-taking photographs, Mark Chambers tells the fascinating story of this truly unique aircraft's design and development as well as its famous and ingenious designer Mr Clarence ' Kelly' Johnson.

Three days later, after repairs, Orville flew to 540ft and landed safely after 12 seconds; this was the first powered flight in aviation history. Pws-10 Avia Bh-33 And Pzl P.7

Category: Aircraft
Description: This volume in the ' Polish Wings' series covers three fighter designs, which equipped the Polish Air Force from the late 1920s up to the outbreak of war. The Avia BH.33 was a Czech aircraft brought in to replace the unsatisfactory SPAD 51 & 61, and built under licence by PWS. The same company then designed the PWS 10, which was the first indigenous Polish fighter to enter service. Finally the PZL P.7a was the first of the classic Pu?awski gull-wing monoplane fighters to see service, soldiering on right up until 1939 although it was obsolete by that time. The service use of all three aircraft is described, illustrated with many photos and full color profiles. The PWS 10 also saw service in Spain, and this chapter in the type's history is also described and illustrated. An invaluable guide to three classic inter-war fighters, with complete details of the colors and markings applied during their service.
