Twelve Years A Slave

Category: History
Description: The shocking first-hand account of one man's remarkable fight for freedom; now an award-winning motion picture. ' Why had I not died in my young years - before God had given me children to love and live for? What unhappiness and suffering and sorrow it would have prevented. I sighed for liberty; but the bondsman's chain was round me, and could not be shaken off.' 1841: Solomon Northup is a successful violinist when he is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Taken from his family in New York State - with no hope of ever seeing them again - and forced to work on the cotton plantations in the Deep South, he spends the next twelve years in captivity until his eventual escape in 1853. First published in 1853, this extraordinary true story proved to be a powerful voice in the debate over slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War. It is a true-life testament of one man's courage and conviction in the face of unfathomable injustice and brutality: its influence on the course of American history cannot be overstated.

Lonely Courage

Category: History
Description: Acclaimed historian Rick Stroud provides a unique and moving narrative of the women who volunteered to be trained by the Special Operations Executive ( SOE) set up by Winston Churchill in 1941 in Lonely Courage. He explains how they dropped into Nazi-held France to support various underground networks both during and after the Second World War. Although it started off small, by the time of France's liberation in 1944 around 400,000 French citizens (nearly 2 per cent of the population) were involved in the Resistance. Very early on in its creation, it was decided that women would play a vital role with 38 agents being recruited from all walks of life. They all knew France well, were fluent in the French language and were prepared to sacrifice everything to help defeat the enemy. The women trained alongside the men, learning how to disappear into the background, how to operate a radio transmitter and how to kill a man with their bare hands. Once trained they were infiltrated behind the lines by parachute or tiny aircraft that could land in remote fields. Some of the women went on to lead thousands of Resistance fighters, while others were arrested, brutally interrogated and sent to concentration camps where they endured torment and death. This book tells their story and sheds light on what life was really like for these brave, talented women.

1606 William Shakespeare And The Year Of Lear

Category: History
Description: With the aftermath of the gunpowder plot, the plague and the division with Scotland, 1606 was a terrible year for England. It was also the year that William Shakespeare brought the tales of Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra and King Lear into the world. A follow-up to author James Shapiro's bestselling 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, 1606: William Shakespeare and the Year of Lear traces the Bard's life and times from the autumn of 1605, when he took the old Elizabethan play The Chronicle History of King Leir and transformed it into his most searing tragedy, King Lear. As he followed this up with two equally compelling works, the book - in a very accessible style - looks at how Shakespeare managed to create stories that identified the fault-lines and crises of that moment in time.

Description: ' When the Nazi power was broken, I asked myself what was the best advice I could give to my fellow citizens here in this island and across the channel in our ravaged continent. There was no difficulty in answering the question. My counsel to Europe can be given in a single word: Unite!' Sir Winston Churchill in 1947 After the Second World War, with Europe in ruins, the victorious Winston Churchill swore to build a peace that would last. Together with a group of thinkers and politicians, Churchill began to build the institutions and the political will that would eventually lead to what we now know as the European Union. He believed in a united Europe, and wanted Britain to play a leading role. This book, based in part on new evidence, reveals his vision: Britain as a leading member of the European family. On the 23rd June this book asks us all to think carefully: what would Churchill have done?

Instructions For British Servicemen In Germany 1944

Category: History
Description: Nine-and-a-half months after D- Day, 30,000 British troops crossed the Rhine as part of the Allied assault on Germany. Two years earlier, work had already started on a guide to assist them in negotiating everyday life in what then was still enemy territory. This extraordinary document was intended to educate soldiers on a range of topics, including German history, the national character, politics, culture, food and drink, currency, and to explain the current situation, including the effect of war on Germany and the German attitudes to the British. It was also intended to condition them to resist the effect of German propaganda by means of a healthy dose of British propaganda. The result is a remarkable booklet, often unintentionally humorous and sometimes crudely stereotypical, it reads by turns like a travel guide (advising on the excellence of German sausages and beer - `one of the pleasantest in Europe') and a crash course in psychological warfare. It is very much a document of the period, revealing as much about British wartime attitudes towards Germany as it does about British hopes and fears. ` If you have to give orders to German civilians, give them in a firm, military manner. The German civilian is used to it and expects it.' ` The Germans are not good at controlling their feelings. They have a streak of hysteria. You will find that Germans may often fly into a passion if some little thing goes wrong.' ` Don't be too ready to listen to stories told by attractive women. They may be acting under orders.'

How To Be A Good Husband

Category: History
Description: The art of being a good husband is not an easy one. This little guide was written for the middle classes of the 1930s who were reading one of the first modern self-help books. Illustrated with contemporary line-drawings, it contains advice by turns delightfully arcane and timelessly true, for example: Don't squeeze the tube of toothpaste from the top instead of from the bottom. This is one of the small things of life that always irritates a careful wife. Don't think that your wife has placed waste-paper baskets in the rooms as ornaments. Don't tell your wife terminological inexactitudes, which are, in plain English, lies. A woman has wonderful intuition for spotting even minor departures from the truth. Do cultivate the habit of coming down to breakfast with a smile. Remember that as the head of the house, it is your duty to see that everyone starts the day in an atmosphere of happiness. Don't criticise the food at your own table when you are entertaining and especially refrain from doing so before the servants.

German Invasion Plans For The British Isles 1940

Category: History
Description: I have decided to prepare a landing operation against England, and if necessary to carry it. - Adolf Hitler, 16 July 1940. Immediately after the fall of France in June 1940, Hitler ordered his generals to organize the invasion of Britain under a plan codenamed Operation Sealion. The objective was to land 160,000 German soldiers along a forty-mile coastal stretch of south-east England. Prior to the invasion, a complex set of documents had been drawn up, consisting of maps, aerial photographs, a physical description of the British Isles - region by region, statistics about roads, lists of strategic targets, and a short phrase book for the invading forces when it became necessary to fraternize with the local populace. This book brings together a selection of these documents and reproduces them in a handy-sized format. It includes aerial photographs of strategic sites, maps of the main urban centres (with identified targets), a detailed listing of British roads, advice for officers about how to mount an attack on each county, a brief description of the social composition of Britain, and a dictionary and phrase book. It also includes an introduction setting the material in its historical and military context. These invasion plans survive in very few numbers. This is the first time that a selection has been brought together, giving a remarkable insight into how the German army planned to invade Britain

However by the end of the decade, the British had 'never had it so good', as prime Minister Harold Mac Millan told them. In this book, Mike Brown looks at some of the major aspects of living in Britain at that time of change; how ordinary people lived, worked and played, of the experiences of childhood, and of a new group - teenagers. How did people spend their new-found wealth, what they ate, wore, watched and listened to; the stories and people who made the headlines - Royals, politicians, and stars of music and screen, in an age overshadowed by the Cold War. Description: The 1960s have gone down in history as the swinging sixties; when the permissive society swept the country in a haze of mini-skirts, psychedelic posters, pop festivals and 'love-ins'. But what was it really like for ordinary British people? In this book, Mike Brown looks at some of the major aspects of living in Britain at the time; how we lived, worked and played, how we shopped, what we ate, wore, drove, watched and listened to. He looks at the stories and people who made the headlines; the mods and rockers, the 'beautiful people', but most of all, how ordinary people really lived and reacted to events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Great Train robbery, and the first moon landing.
