Twelve Years A Slave

Category: History
Description: The shocking first-hand account of one man's remarkable fight for freedom; now an award-winning motion picture. ' Why had I not died in my young years - before God had given me children to love and live for? What unhappiness and suffering and sorrow it would have prevented. I sighed for liberty; but the bondsman's chain was round me, and could not be shaken off.' 1841: Solomon Northup is a successful violinist when he is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Taken from his family in New York State - with no hope of ever seeing them again - and forced to work on the cotton plantations in the Deep South, he spends the next twelve years in captivity until his eventual escape in 1853. First published in 1853, this extraordinary true story proved to be a powerful voice in the debate over slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War. It is a true-life testament of one man's courage and conviction in the face of unfathomable injustice and brutality: its influence on the course of American history cannot be overstated.

Lonely Courage

Category: History
Description: Acclaimed historian Rick Stroud provides a unique and moving narrative of the women who volunteered to be trained by the Special Operations Executive ( SOE) set up by Winston Churchill in 1941 in Lonely Courage. He explains how they dropped into Nazi-held France to support various underground networks both during and after the Second World War. Although it started off small, by the time of France's liberation in 1944 around 400,000 French citizens (nearly 2 per cent of the population) were involved in the Resistance. Very early on in its creation, it was decided that women would play a vital role with 38 agents being recruited from all walks of life. They all knew France well, were fluent in the French language and were prepared to sacrifice everything to help defeat the enemy. The women trained alongside the men, learning how to disappear into the background, how to operate a radio transmitter and how to kill a man with their bare hands. Once trained they were infiltrated behind the lines by parachute or tiny aircraft that could land in remote fields. Some of the women went on to lead thousands of Resistance fighters, while others were arrested, brutally interrogated and sent to concentration camps where they endured torment and death. This book tells their story and sheds light on what life was really like for these brave, talented women.

1606 William Shakespeare And The Year Of Lear

1606 William Shakespeare And The Year Of Lear

Category: History
Description: With the aftermath of the gunpowder plot, the plague and the division with Scotland, 1606 was a terrible year for England. It was also the year that William Shakespeare brought the tales of Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra and King Lear into the world. A follow-up to author James Shapiro's bestselling 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare, 1606: William Shakespeare and the Year of Lear traces the Bard's life and times from the autumn of 1605, when he took the old Elizabethan play The Chronicle History of King Leir and transformed it into his most searing tragedy, King Lear. As he followed this up with two equally compelling works, the book - in a very accessible style - looks at how Shakespeare managed to create stories that identified the fault-lines and crises of that moment in time.

How To Be A Good Mother-in-law

Category: History
Description: Everyone knows a joke about mothers-in-law, but what are the golden rules you need to become a popular one? The authors of this pioneering guide, first published in the 1930s, aimed to dramatically improve relationships for all the family with sound advice which is as relevant today as it was in the early twentieth century: ' If your opinion is not sought, don't volunteer it.' Practical tips are given on a range of issues, such as how to visit a married daughter, how best to interact with grandchildren, how not to pass comment at the dinner table and what degree of independence should be granted to married sons. The guide even contemplates living with the married couple and offers advice on how to negotiate this situation, as well as giving examples of how not to behave on your son or daughter's wedding day. Packed with amusing scenarios of provocative behaviour as well as pithy advice, and illustrated with contemporary line drawings, this charming guide will win over both novices and veterans in this much maligned role.

Life In The 1960s

Category: History
Description: The 1960s have gone down in history as the swinging sixties; when the permissive society swept the country in a haze of mini-skirts, psychedelic posters, pop festivals and 'love-ins'. But what was it really like for ordinary British people? In this book, Mike Brown looks at some of the major aspects of living in Britain at the time; how we lived, worked and played, how we shopped, what we ate, wore, drove, watched and listened to. He looks at the stories and people who made the headlines; the mods and rockers, the 'beautiful people', but most of all, how ordinary people really lived and reacted to events such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Great Train robbery, and the first moon landing. The book will bring back memories for those who were there, and, for those who were not yet born, it will give them an idea of what the 60s were really like.

Imperial War Museums History Collection - 3 Books

Category: History
Description: Published in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum, this three-book collection brings together a fascinating and authoritative social history of the Second World War. A Prayer for Gallipoli covers the Great War from the point of view of a chaplain. Kenneth Best had no military training, so to fulfil his pastoral role, he had to get close to the front line and work with troops as they were under fire. As his empathy for the troops grew larger, he became more and more disgusted with their leaders. These diaries provide an insight into the horrific realities of trench warfare. The Secret History of the Blitz by Joshua Levine looks at the people that are not normally mentioned during accounts of the War - those spivs, outcasts and unsung heroes who were in the shadows; and D- Day to Victory features the diaries of a British tank commander as the war finally came to an end. All written using archive and primary sources, these are candid and compelling reads about the triumphs and tragedies of war.

The women covered in the book are Lady Astor, who went on to become the first female MP, Mrs Greville, who cultivated a relationship with Edward VII, and Lady Londonderry, Lady Cunard, Laura Corrigan and Lady Colefax. During the aftermath of the First World War, the previously strict hierarchies of the British class system had been weakened and a number of ambitious women had made sure it was their time. Taking their place at the top of society as great hostesses, they ruled over London from their dining tables and salons, entertaining all kinds of powerful people and celebrities. World War Miscellanies Set - 2 Books

Category: History
Description: If you've ever wondered who fired the first British shot of the First World War, how low the Dambusters flew or just how many ships were sunk at Pearl Harbor, these two books will provide the answers. Compiled and written by Norman Ferguson, the miscellanies tell the stories of the battles, aircraft, weapons, soldiers, heroes and enemies of both world wars, while also presenting these tales in accessible, bite-sized chunks. Among the events covered in the First World War are the downing of the Red Baron and the first WWI soldier to receive the Victoria Cross... The book based around the Second World War tells the stories of the Battle of Britain, the Siege of Leningrad, the horrors of the Holocaust and the D- Day landings... Compelling throughout, the books also contain a startling number of facts and figures to dip into.
