Confessions Of An English Opium Eater

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: Harper Collins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. ' I here present you, courteous reader, with the record of a remarkable period in my life ...' The Confessions of an English Opium Eater is both a classic of the English autobiographical genre and a hard-nosed study of the effects of drugs on an artistic mind. A close associate of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the brilliant but troubled de Quincey recounts both the pleasures and pain of opium addiction in captivating prose. The result is by turns enlightened, nightmarish and witty - a faithful mirror of the drug itself.

Magnify Scottish Murders

Scottish Murders

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: An anthology of Scotland's worst and most infamous murders, this book contains 22 stories from Scotland's bloodstained past. Dating back to the fifteenth century, we have the story of the gruesome Bean family, who terrorized and cannibalized victims in Galloway, the grim account of David Rizzio's death, the murder of Marion Gilchrist, and trials of Oscar Slater, the crimes of the never-traced Bible John, and the World's End Murders. These, and other chapters, make up the compelling accounts of grisly murders, told in a calm and straightforward manner by the author. Capital punishment, abolished in 1969 in Britain, is also discussed. Details of Scotland's last execution for murder, in 1963 in Aberdeen, and last public execution in 1868 in Dumfries, highlight the much changed attitudes in British society today. The author also explains how it was commonplace until the early 1830s for bodies of executed murderers to be given up for dissection. Such was the fate of William Burke's corpse - the last body that he provided for Edinburgh's surgeons was his own. And this detail is expanded upon in an excellent chapter on Burke and Hare. The author's tone is reassuring with its matter-of-fact descriptions, and background detail that place the murders rmly in context. The book is now in its seventh printing. Judy Hamilton is a pseudonym, and the author has written several Scottish bestselling titles.

Description: Actor. Film star. Martial artist. Mountaineer. Trained undertaker. Unlikely diplomat. There's no one quite like Brian Blessed and in his new autobiography, Absolute Pandemonium, the national treasure takes readers on a riotous journey from his childhood to finding fame. Told in his own words (you can even hear his bellowing voice as you read!), Brain leaves no detail to the imagination as he regales readers with tales such as falling for Katharine Hepburn on the set of The Trojan Women, suffering some unfortunate wire problems when he's hoisted to the heavens on the set of Flash Gordon and charming George Lucas to land the part of Boss Nass in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. There are far less ' Hollywood' stories along the way, too, where Brian takes secret revenge on his headmistress (and her very big bottom), woos his wife Hildegard Neil and braves the shocking death toll on the hit drama series My Family and Other Animals... A perfect book for his many, many fans and those with an interest in film and theatre, Brian Bessed's autobiography is hilarious, light-hearted and very, very loud.

Kind Of Blue

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: A witty, honest and forthright read that takes its title from his beloved Miles Davis, Ken Clarke looks back over his 46 years as the member of parliament for Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire in Kind of Blue: A Political Memoir. One of the genuine ' Big Beasts' of the political scene, Ken has been at the heart of the government under three different prime ministers and is well known not only for his Europhile views but also his love of cricket, Nottingham Forest Football Club and jazz. In this memoir, he charts his rise from a working-class scholarship to high political office and the upper echelons of his party and the government. However, Clarke is not a straightforward Tory; his position on the left of the party often led to Margaret Thatcher questioning his credentials and his passionate commitment to the European project has led many fellow Conservatives to regard him with suspicion - and cost him the leadership on no less than three occasions. With a ringside seat in British politics for four decades, this is a candid account of life both in and out of government full of observations that will enthral readers of all political persuasions.

From her brief first engagement to her happy second marriage and how she drew inspiration from her childhood pets and beloved locations in the Lake District, this book also explores Beatrix's last 30 years - when she abandoned books and worked as a farmer and conservationist, saving thousands of acres of the Lake District that still thrive today.
