Scottish Murders

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: An anthology of Scotland's worst and most infamous murders, this book contains 22 stories from Scotland's bloodstained past. Dating back to the fifteenth century, we have the story of the gruesome Bean family, who terrorized and cannibalized victims in Galloway, the grim account of David Rizzio's death, the murder of Marion Gilchrist, and trials of Oscar Slater, the crimes of the never-traced Bible John, and the World's End Murders. These, and other chapters, make up the compelling accounts of grisly murders, told in a calm and straightforward manner by the author. Capital punishment, abolished in 1969 in Britain, is also discussed. Details of Scotland's last execution for murder, in 1963 in Aberdeen, and last public execution in 1868 in Dumfries, highlight the much changed attitudes in British society today. The author also explains how it was commonplace until the early 1830s for bodies of executed murderers to be given up for dissection. Such was the fate of William Burke's corpse - the last body that he provided for Edinburgh's surgeons was his own. And this detail is expanded upon in an excellent chapter on Burke and Hare. The author's tone is reassuring with its matter-of-fact descriptions, and background detail that place the murders rmly in context. The book is now in its seventh printing. Judy Hamilton is a pseudonym, and the author has written several Scottish bestselling titles.

Description: The third volume of Alan Johnson's bestselling memoir takes you direct into the corridors of Westminster and lifts the lid on the life of a hard-working constituency MP. It tells of Alan's early political skirmishes as a trade union leader, where his negotiating skills and charismatic style came to the notice of Tony Blair and other senior members of the Labour Party. As a result, Alan was chosen to stand in the constituency of Hull West and Hessle, and entered Parliament as an MP after the landslide election victory for Labour in May 1997. But Alan was different to most politicians and here he talks of his support for the Hull trawlerman and their families. Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: Shock, tears, anger, loss - X Factor 2012 had it all and much, much more! Fans all over the country were divided like never before, as they fought to defend their favorite acts with every tool at their disposal. Twitter, Facebook, blogs and phone lines were all clogged with opposing opinions from everyone from teens to grandmothers; politicians to well-known celebs. With name changes, shock exits and a few phoenix-like rises from the flames of elimination, our hearts were tugged in every way imaginable. And at the center of the show was the fiercest battle of all - the battle of the boy bands. Who could have known that this year would see one of the closest and tensest X Factor wars in history. Not since Boyzone took on Take That in the nineties had such a fierce battle been fought. The prize? A rare recording contract, yes, but most importantly the chance to follow in the footsteps of Alexandra Burke, JLS, One Direction and Little Mix - and become international stars. With so much at stake, each band ad to prove their worth over the other - in spite of their blossoming friendships. And when the battle was won, would fame and fortune come to either group? The ninth series of the X Factor began airing on ITV on August 18th, 2012. It was then that the world met Union J and District 3 - although neither band were called by those names when they first auditioned. It would be the start f some very big life changes for Josh, JJ, Jaymi, George, Greg, Dan and Mickey.

Magnify Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: ' For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door And Leerie stops to light it, as he lights so many more...' The picture of a small boy peering from a window at dusk to watch the lamplighter in the street is one of the enduring images of 19th-century Edinburgh, and the child probably the most famous ever brought up there. Robert Louis Stevenson loved to conjure up a dashing, romantic lineage for himself, dreaming that he was descended from the colourful outlaw Rob Roy Mac Gregor. The reality was less flamboyant but no less remarkable and he would learn that the street lamps of Edinburgh owed their brilliance to the scientific work of his own great-grandfather. This welcome addition to the Robert Louis Stevenson canon gives a concise account of his life - his family background, childhood and adolescence in a Calvinist, hard-working household in Scotland, his travels in three continents and his final years in the South Seas. It examines his relationships with his parents and his nurse, with English and American friends, particularly the family into which he married, and with the Samoan islanders among whom he died at the age of 44. Stevenson's childhood experiences and Scottish identity fed his fertile imagination wherever he found himself. His legacy includes travel writing, essays and poetry, and novels such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, The Master of Ballantrae, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, St Ives and Weir of Hermiston, still read and enjoyed more than one hundred years after his death. Robert Louis Stevenson: The Travelling Mind is an insightful introduction to the life and work of one of the world's best-loved writers.

Henry Viii (penguin Monarchs)

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: The acclaimed Penguin Monarchs series: short, fresh, expert accounts of England's rulers - now in paperback Henry VIII's reign transformed the physical and spiritual landscape of England. Magnificent, tyrannical, a strong ruler, a 'pillager of the commonwealth', this most notorious of kings remains a figure of extreme contradictions: a devout traditionalist who oversaw a cataclysmic rupture with the church in Rome; a talented, charismatic, imposing figure who nevertheless could not bear to meet people's eyes when he talked to them. In this revealing new account, John Guy explores how Henry himself understood the world and his place in it - from his sheltered and increasingly isolated upbringing and the blazing glory of his accession; to his desperate quest for recognition, fame and an heir, and the terrifying paranoia of his last, agonising, 54-inch-waisted years - and in doing so casts new light on his choice of wives and ministers, his impact on the European stage, and his extraordinary legacy.

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: The acclaimed Penguin Monarchs series: short, fresh, expert accounts of England's rulers - now in paperback The formation of England happened against the odds - the division of the country into rival kingdoms, the assaults of the Vikings, the precarious position of the island on the edge of the known world. But King Alfred ensured the survival of Wessex, his son Eadweard expanded it, and his grandson AEthelstan finally united Mercia and Wessex, conquered Northumbria and became Rex totius Britanniae. Tom Holland recounts this extraordinarily exciting story with relish and drama. We meet the great figures of the age, including Alfred and his daughter AEthelflaed, ' Lady of the Mercians', who brought AEthelstan up at the Mercian court. At the end of the book we understand the often confusing history of the Anglo- Saxon kings better than ever before.

Charles I (penguin Monarchs)

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: The acclaimed Penguin Monarchs series: short, fresh, expert accounts of England's rulers - now in paperback The tragedy of Charles I dominates one of the most strange and painful periods in British history as the whole island tore itself apart over a deadly, entangled series of religious and political disputes. In Mark Kishlansky's brilliant account it is never in doubt that Charles created his own catastrophe, but he was nonetheless opposed by men with far fewer scruples and less consistency who for often quite contradictory reasons conspired to destroy him. This is a remarkable portrait of one of the most talented, thoughtful, loyal, moral, artistically alert and yet, somehow, disastrous of all this country's rulers.

Category: Letters Diaries Biographies and Autobiographies
Description: The acclaimed Penguin Monarchs series: short, fresh, expert accounts of England's rulers - now in paperback ' After my death', George V said of his eldest son and heir, 'the boy will ruin himself in 12 months'. From the death of his father in 1936 to the constitutional crisis provoked by his proposal to the then-married American socialite Wallis Simpson and his subsequent abdication, Edward VIII reigned for less than year. In choosing the woman he loved over his royal birthright, Edward fulfilled his father's prophecy and instigated the monarchy's most significant upheaval of the twentieth century. Retitled ' Duke of Windsor' and essentially exiled, Edward has remained a controversial figure ever since. Through his correspondence with, amongst other confidants, Winston Churchill, Piers Brendon traces Edward's tumultuous life in this superb, pacey biography.

Description: The third in a series of true short stories from foster carer Mia Marconi. Brody had been on the at-risk register since birth but was only removed from his alcoholic parents when he reached the age of six. Foster carer Mia Marconi was thrilled when he first arrived - a boy the same age as her son. It can be so bewildering for foster children when they arrive. The older ones are usually withdrawn and sullen. The younger ones will be screaming, spitting at you, making themselves sick and throwing themselves on the floor. For Mia, it's normally her boisterous, happy children who provide the comfort at the beginning, because why should they trust another adult. Children always feel safe and secure when there are other children about. Mia believes it's through making relationships with other children that they begin to trust adults again. But little did she know that six-year-old Brody was actually taking his anger and frustration out on her son. She quickly begins to realise the heavy price her family has had to pay.

Description: ' I was beginning to love my thief, a man I barely knew, but whom I had trusted and even liked, and who had taken my savings, amongst many other crimes.' A bravura piece of very personal reportage by Hanif Kureishi about the man who stole his life savings. Nearing sixty and needing to plan for his and his children's future, Hanif Kureishi employed an accountant from a reputable firm. When the accountant recommended investing in a property scheme, Kureishi followed his advice - only to find out that the accountant was a fraudster and his entire life savings had vanished. In this thought-provoking account of his conman, Kureishi uses this theft as a way of exploring some of the contradictions and dilemmas of our lives: the true value of money; the role of deception in art; how you can love and hate simultaneously; why the financial world seems to revolve around deceit; and what we might recover from those who have stolen from us.
