Lundy Rockall Dogger Fair Isle

Category: Travel
Description: You may have heard the names Lundy, Rockall, Dogger and Fair Isle mentioned in the fishing forecasts on BBC World Service, but they are in fact islands off the coast of Britain that deserve to be celebrated. Unique, rugged and a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, these remote islands offer an alternative version of life in Britain, one that runs parallel while almost out of sync with the mainland. In this charming and thoroughly well-researched book, authors Matthew Clayton and Anthony Atkinson take readers on a journey through the history, folklore, wildlife and geography of these beautiful islands and offer fascinating insight to their significance throughout history - from Viking invasions to Nazi occupation. Packed with maps and illustrations full of character, the book honours the diversity of Britain's off-shore islands and paints the most exquisite picture of their rare and individual magic.

Magnify Aal Aboot Newcastle
Aal Aboot Newcastle

Aal Aboot Newcastle

Category: Travel
Description: Newcastle is not your average northern city. Visitors and locals are often surprised by what they find, whether it be the elegance of Grey Street, the unexpected timber-framed merchants' houses of the 1650s Sandhill, the charming cathedral church of St Nicholas or the magnificent Tyne bridges. Newcastle was a major medieval town, a place of trade and industry long before Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool rose to significance. For centuries the formidable medieval walls defined this town. Amongst the best in Europe, some impressive sections of this wall remain, recalling the town of old. Other reminders are the 'new castle' with its keep and Blackgate, the historic streets with their ancient names and the age old phrase of pointless pursuit: 'coals to Newcastle', recalling the lucrative trade that made Newcastle the 'spacious, extended, infinitely populous place' of Daniel Defoe's time. Officially Newcastle has only been a city since 1882 and the home to the beloved Newcastle United for ten years less than that, but both are still affectionately 'the Toon' in the hearts of the Geordies. In truth Newcastle has come a long way from its quayside origins as the town (or toon) that hugged the steeply rising banks of the Tyne for centuries. As late as 1830 this riverside area was still the hub of the town, enclosed within the walls that stretched up the hill. Here within the northerly sections of the wall there was still much open space where a friary and nunnery had once stood. A decade later these open spaces had been filled with grand new streets of classical design courtesy of the builder Richard Grainger. A new monument dedicated to Earl Grey formed part of this scheme. It became the focal point for the new town, with Blackett Street, its backdrop, running along the course of what had been the northern edge of the town wall. The old northern fringe of Newcastle was now the very centre of the town and within a century this centre had shifted further into Northumberland Street, beyond the walls. The evolution, growth and development of Newcastle is a fascinating story and is explored in this book through the streets and famous buildings. All of the major suburbs of the city feature in the book from Gosforth and Jesmond in the north, Walker and Byker in the east to Scotswood, Denton, Benwell and Elswick in the west.

The 50 Greatest Walks Of The World

Category: Travel
Description: Barry Stone, the author of 1001 Walks You Must Experience Before You Die, presents a showcase of some of the world's most famous - and soon-to-be discovered - walking trails. Presenting a personal history of his experiences on the walks, Barry reveals how slings and carabiners kept him from falling off the Sydney Harbour Bridge and how gaps are still being filled by countless grassroots communities on the continent-wide Trans Canada Trail. From British favourites including the Pennine Way and Dyke Path to more continental offerings like Italy's Cinque Terre Classic, the book is fascinating for those who love to ramble and those who want to learn more about the world.

Take The Gap

Category: Travel
Description: There is a disputed statistic that half a million South Africans are currently living in London. The people who are supposed to know, the British Home Office and South African Department of Home Affairs, seem a little unwilling to commit to an exact figure, perhaps for fear of revealing the sheer scale of the migration north. All that's for sure is that there are a lot of us already hanging about the British capital and that there's zero indication that this state of affairs is likely to change any time soon. South Africans are great at taking the gap. We are lightning-quick at cutting into three feet of space in the faster lane of traffic at rush hour. We are wily business entrepreneurs who can see a way to make a buck, and we are even getting better at slipping through the opposition's defense on the rugby field. We're an opportunistic, ambitious lot who are going places. It's no wonder then that every year so many young South Africans pack their bags and head to London to make the most of the chance to live and work in one of the most cosmopolitan and vibrant cities in the world. And, aside from the excitement and stimulation of experiencing a world capital, there is the benefit of earning pounds, travelling and tasting real independence. A stint in London has become a right of passage, so what are you waiting for? Get reading, planning and packing and make sure that you also Take the Gap.
