Description: ' Montgomery's photographs capture the reality of Americans in crisis, in all our flawed, tragic, ridiculous glory." | ?? Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty American Mirror is award-winning photographer Philip Montgomery's dramatic chronicle of the United States at a time of profound change. • Aperture Tommy Kha: Half, Full, Quarter

    Price: £45.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: Tommy Kha: Half, Full, Quarter weaves together self-portraits and classically bucolic landscapes punctuated by the traces of East Asian stories embedded in the topography of the American South. In this first major monograph, featuring almost a decade of work, Tommy Kha explores the highly personal psycho-geography of his hometown. As the artist states, 'Memphis has become, for me, not only the place where I was raised but an active borderland between fantasy and memory, nostalgia and history, nonfiction and mythology." Memphis is where his mother, fleeing Vietnam in the early 1980s, settled, along with his extended family. Throughout the work, his mother emerges as a recurring character, sometimes the subject of quiet photographic study, and in others, a collaborative muse. 'I'm a cut of my mom," Kha asserts, 'Every photograph I make of her is a Half Self-Portrait." In snapshots drawn from a family album that serves as the one record of her journey to the United States, she is the source of nostalgia and barely captured memory. In assembling a visual account of the struggle to find his own voice and narrate the fragmented history of his family, Kha challenges the cultural amnesia around Asian lives and experiences in recent American histories. Acclaimed author Hua Hsu contributes an engaging essay, 'People Need to Smile More," and Mac Arthur Fellow An-My L' conducts an incisive conversation with Kha that delves into his family history and artistic strategies. Tommy Kha: Half, Full, Quarter is the result of the Next Step Award, a partnership between Aperture and Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York, in collaboration with the 7|G Foundation. An exhibition of the work will open at Baxter St in New York in February 2023.

  • Aperture Diane Arbus: A Box of Ten Photographs

    Price: £60.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: In May 1971, Artforum, bastion of late modernism, featured the work of a photographer for the very first time. On its cover and in a six-page spread, it announced the publication of a portfolio, A box of ten photographs, by Diane Arbus. In the words of the magazine's editor, Philip Leider, 'The portfolio changed everything. one could no longer deny [photography's] status as art." At the time of Arbus's death, two months later, only four of the intended edition of fifty had been sold. Two had been purchased by Richard Avedon (the first for himself, the second as a gift for his friend Mike Nichols); another was purchased by Jasper Johns; and a fourth by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper's Bazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets; each print was accompanied by an interleaving vellum slip-sheet inscribed with an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph, A woman with her baby monkey, N.J., 1971. Acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., in 1986 | ??and the only one of the four completed and sold by Arbus that is publicly held | ??that portfolio is the subject of an exhibition on view at the museum from April through September 2018. This exceptional book replicates the nature of Diane Arbus's original and now legendary object. Smithsonian curator John P. Jacob, who has unearthed a trove of new information in preparing the book and exhibition, weaves a fascinating tale of the creation, production, and continuing repercussions of this seminal work. • Aperture Diana Markosian: Father

    Price: £40.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: Diana Markosian's Father is an intimate and engrossing diaristic portrayal of estrangement and reconnection, recounted through documentary photographs, family snapshots, text, and visual ephemera. Diana Markosian: Father presents the photographer's journey to another place and another time, where Markosian attempts to piece together an image of a familiar stranger | ??her long-lost father. The book explores her father's absence, her reconciliation with him, and the shared emptiness of their prolonged estrangement. The images, made over the course of a decade, take place in her father's home in Armenia. In Markosian's first monograph, Santa Barbara (Aperture, 2020), the photographer recreates the story of her family's journey from post- Soviet Russia to the US in the 1990s. Father uses both documentary photographs and archives of objects, letters, and vernacular images to probe the fifteen years of absence and separation from the photographer's childhood. In this voyage of self-discovery, Markosian touchingly renders her longing for connection to a man she barely remembers and who asks her, when she finds him, 'Why did it take you so long?".

  • Aperture Photography After Frank

    Price: £22.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: In Photography After Frank, former New York Times writer and picture editor Philip Gefter presents the tale of contemporary photography, starting with a pivotal moment: Robert Frank's seminal work in the 1950s. Along the way, he connects the dots of photography's transformation into what it is today. Gefter begins with Frank's challenge to the notion of photography's objectivity with the grainy, off-handed spontaneity of The Americans. Next comes the 'staged document" and postmodernism's further challenge to image fidelity. Other themes are photojournalism, the diversity of portraiture, the influence of private and corporate collections on curatorial decisions, and how the market shapes art making. Throughout the book, Gefter deftly connects Frank's legacy with the work of dozens of important individual artists who followed in his wake, from Lee Friedlander and Nan Goldin to Stephen Shore and Ryan Mc Ginley. The book includes texts written exclusively for this publication as well as essays drawn from Gefter's critical writings, reviews, and even obituaries. Photography After Frank offers a page-turning yet journalistic approach bound to appeal to students and artworld aficionados, alike.

  • Aperture Martin Parr

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: In 1975, fresh out of art school, Martin Parr found poor footing in the London photography scene, so he moved to the picturesque Yorkshire Pennine mill town of Hebden Bridge. Over a period of five years, he documented the town in photographs, showing in particular the aspects of traditional life that were beginning to decline. Susie Parr, whom he had met in Manchester, joined him in documenting a year in the life of a small Methodist chapel, together with its farming community. Such chapels seemed to encapsulate the region's disappearing way of life. Here Martin Parr found his photographic voice, while together he and Susie assembled a remarkable and touching historic document | ??now published in book form for the first time. The Non-Conformists takes its title from the Methodist and Baptist chapels that then char - acterized this area of Yorkshire and defined the fiercely independent character of the town. In words and pictures, the Parrs vividly and affectionately document cobbled streets, flat-capped mill workers, hardy gamekeepers, henpecked husbands, and jovial shop owners. The best Parr photographs are interleaved with Susie Parr's detailed background descriptions of the society they observed.

  • Aperture Elliott Erwitt: Home Around the World

    Price: £45.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: Elliott Erwitt: Home Around the World offers a timely and critical reconsideration of Erwitt's unparalleled life as a photographer. Produced alongside a major retrospective exhibition, the book features examples of Erwitt's early experiments in California, his intimate family portraits in New York, his major magazine assignments and long-term documentary interests, and his ongoing personal investigations of public spaces and their transitory inhabitants. Essays by photography experts based on extensive new interviews with the photographer consider less-studied aspects of Erwitt's work: his engagement with social and political issues through photojournalism, the humanist qualities of his very early photographs, and his work as a filmmaker. Home Around the World traces the development and refinement of Erwitt's unique visual approach over time. With over two hundred photographs, and ephemera including magazine reproductions, advertisements, and contact sheets, this volume is the first to offer a comprehensive historical treatment of Erwitt's body of work and position in the field.

  • Aperture Ernest Cole: House of Bondage

    Price: £50.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: First published in 1967, Ernest Cole's House of Bondage has been lauded as one of the most significant photobooks of the twentieth century, revealing the horrors of apartheid to the world for the first time and influencing generations of photographers around the globe. Reissued for contemporary audiences, this edition adds a chapter of unpublished work found in a recently resurfaced cache of negatives and recontextualizes this pivotal book for our time. Cole, a Black South African man, photographed the underbelly of apartheid in the 1950s and '60s, often at great personal risk. He methodically captured the myriad forms of violence embedded in everyday life for the Black majority under the apartheid system | ??picturing its miners, its police, its hospitals, its schools. In 1966, Cole fled South Africa and smuggled out his negatives; House of Bondage was published the following year with his writings and first-person account. This edition retains the powerful story of the original while adding new perspectives on Cole's life and the legacy of House of Bondage. It also features an added chapter | ??compiled and titled 'Black Ingenuity" by Cole | ??of never-before-seen photographs of Black creative expression and cultural activity taking place under apartheid. Made available again nearly fifty-five years later, House of Bondage remains a visually powerful and politically incisive document of the apartheid era. • Aperture Ed Templeton: Wires Crossed

    Price: £50.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: Part memoir, part document of the DIY, punk-infused subculture of skateboarding as it came of age in the 1990s and early 2000s, Ed Templeton's Wires Crossed pulses with the raw, combustive energy of Templeton's image-making from the last twenty-plus years. Illustrated by photographs, collages, texts, maps, and other ephemera from Templeton's journals, Wires Crossed offers an insider's look at a subculture in the making and reflects the unique aesthetic stamp that sprang from the skate world he helped create. Templeton occupies the rare position of having been a professional skateboarder, a two-time World Skateboarding champion, as well as a photographer and artist working within the skateboard community as it gained increasing cultural currency in the 1990s and beyond. His work first gained recognition as part of the Beautiful Losers collective loosely gathered around Aaron Rose's Alleged Gallery on Manhattan's Lower East Side. This work, much of it previously unpublished and unseen, explores Templeton's own journey as an image maker, as well as the lives of professional skateboarders as they spent long hours crisscrossing the world on tour, reveling in their newfound status as rock star-like figures and the eternal search for new terrain to skate. Interviews between Templeton and fellow pro-skaters and friends add compelling detail about the pressures and pleasures of life on the road, and what it's like to obsessively pursue an art form | ??whether on their decks or behind the camera. Price: £19.95

    Brand: Aperture

Description: Diane Arbus: A Chronology is the closest thing possible to reading a contemporaneous diary by one of the most daring, influential, and controversial artists of the twentieth century. Drawn primarily from Arbus's extensive correspondence with friends, family, and colleagues; personal notebooks; and other unpublished writings, this eautifully produced volume exposes the private thoughts and motivations of an artist whose astonishing vision derived from the courage to see things as they are and the grace to permit them simply to be. Further rounding out Arbus's life and work are exhaustively researched footnotes that amplify the entire Chronology. A section at the end of the book provides biographies for fifty-five personalities, family members, friends, and colleagues, from Marvin Israel and Lisette Model to Weegee and August Sander. Describing the Chronology in Art in America, Leo Rubinfien noted that 'Arbus . wrote as well as she photographed, and her letters, where she heard each nuance of her words, were gifts to the people who received them. Once one has been introduced to it, the beauty of her spirit permanently changes and deepens one's understanding of her pictures . " The texts in Diane Arbus: A Chronology originally appeared in Diane Arbus Revelations. This volume makes this invaluable text available in an accessible, paperback volume for the very first time.

Description: At turns humorous and absurd, heartfelt and searching, Photo No-Nos is for photographers of all levels wishing to avoid easy metaphors and to sharpen their visual communication skills. Photographers often have unwritten lists of subjects they tell themselves not to shoot | ??things that are cliché, exploitative, derivative, sometimes even arbitrary. Photo No-Nos features ideas, stories, and anecdotes from many of the world's most talented photographers and photography professionals on what not to photograph, along with an encyclopedic list of taboo subjects compiled from and illustrated by contributors. Price: £60.00

    Brand: Aperture

Description: Untitled is the third volume of Diane Arbus's work and the only one devoted exclusively to a single project. The photographs were taken at residences for the mentally retarded between 1969 and 1971, in the last years of Arbus's life. Although she considered doing a book on the subject, the vast majority of these pictures remained unpublished prior to this volume. These photographs achieve a lyricism, an emotional purity that sets them apart from all her other accomplishments. 'Finally what I've been searching for," she wrote at the time. The product of her consistently unflinching regard for reality as she found it, the images in this book have less in common with the documentary than with the mythic. Untitled may well be Arbus's most transcendent, most romantic vision. It is a celebration of the singularity and connectedness of each and every one of us. For Diane Arbus, this is what making pictures was all about. This is the first edition in which the image separations were created digitally; the files have been specially prepared by Robert J. Hennessey using prints by Neil Selkirk. Aperture Untitled: Diane Arbus - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
