Description: America's most acclaimed historian presents the intricate story of the year of the birth of the United States of America. 1776 tells two gripping stories: how a group of squabbling, disparate colonies became the United States, and how the British Empire tried to stop them. A story with a cast of amazing characters from George III to George Washington, to soldiers and their families, this exhilarating book is one of the great pieces of historical narrative.

Review: The second book I've read from David McCullough, after the biography of John Adams. He does an excellent job describing facts and events of the time in a way that is engaging, interesting, and easy to read. Highly recommend to anyone interesting in reading about the American revolutionary war.

Review: Avid fan of McCullough having read all his other books except The Johnstown Flood. Every other book was a version published by Simon & Schuster. This book however is the Penguin version and, in order to make the book smaller, has a much much smaller typeface. My recommendation would be not to buy this version but to look around for a Simon & Schuster version. Content will no doubt be worthy of 5 stars, Presentation however only worth 1 star. Hence on balance 3 stars.

Waterstones 1776: A London Chronicle, or How to Divert Oneself while Losing an Empire

Description: 'I can hardly believe, by the tranquillity of every thing about me, that we are a people who have just lost an empire. But it is so.' So wrote Edmund Burke on 30th May 1776. In the city about him duels, elopements, plays, highway robberies, masquerades and daily life continued much as usual while across the Atlantic cities burned and muskets blazed as the political order of the world was recast. Much has been written about events in America at this time, but what was it like to be living in London? This book seeks to answer that question by way of a daily chronicle in which the year's stories emerge through diaries, letters, newspaper reports, and a wealth of previously unpublished material, from state papers to Edward Gibbon's pocket-book. Among notable events were the trial of the Duchess of Kingston for bigamy, David Garrick's farewell to the stage, Captain Cook's setting out on his final voyage, and publication of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations. These unfold alongside a host of forgotten stories, characters and incidents to create a revealing portrait of London in a momentous year. Description: Who set the mysterious fire that burned down much of New York City shortly after the British took the city during the Revolutionary War? New York City, the strategic center of the Revolutionary War, was the most important place in North America in 1776. That summer, an unruly rebel army under George Washington repeatedly threatened to burn the city rather than let the British take it. Shortly after the Crown's forces took New York City, much of it mysteriously burned to the ground. This is the first book to fully explore the Great Fire of 1776 and why its origins remained a mystery even after the British investigated it in 1776 and 1783. Uncovering stories of espionage, terror, and radicalism, Benjamin L. Carp paints a vivid picture of the chaos, passions, and unresolved tragedies that define a historical moment we usually associate with 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.". Description: With the violent separation between the United States and Britain which began in 1776, the new 'Americans' set off to fulfill their manifest destiny and rule their new land from coast to coast. As they pushed westward, they came into conflict with both natives and other European settlers, and began to build fortresses to defend their newly claimed land. This book charts the development and variation of the fortresses of the American Frontier, covering both American defenses and those of the Spanish in the west. It also examines the little-known forts of early Russian settlers on the Pacific coast. Waterstones Forts of the American Frontier 1776–1891 - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones The Counter-Revolution of 1776

    Price: £23.99

Description: Illuminates how the preservation of slavery was a motivating factor for the Revolutionary War The successful 1776 revolt against British rule in North America has been hailed almost universally as a great step forward for humanity. But the Africans then living in the colonies overwhelmingly sided with the British. In this trailblazing book, Gerald Horne shows that in the prelude to 1776, the abolition of slavery seemed all but inevitable in London, delighting Africans as much as it outraged slaveholders, and sparking the colonial revolt. Prior to 1776, anti-slavery sentiments were deepening throughout Britain and in the Caribbean, rebellious Africans were in revolt. For European colonists in America, the major threat to their security was a foreign invasion combined with an insurrection of the enslaved. It was a real and threatening possibility that London would impose abolition throughout the colonies | ??a possibility the founding fathers feared would bring slave rebellions to their shores. To forestall it, they went to war. The so-called Revolutionary War, Horne writes, was in part a counter-revolution, a conservative movement that the founding fathers fought in order to preserve their right to enslave others. The Counter-Revolution of 1776 brings us to a radical new understanding of the traditional heroic creation myth of the United States.

  • Waterstones Holy Madness: Romantics, Patriots And Revolutionaries 1776-1871

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: From America's fight for independence to the Paris Commune - an exotic collection of fanatics, adventurers, poets and thinkers are brought vividly to life. Holy Madness probes into the psyche that was responsible for so many of the founding events of our modern world, and into the instincts that inspired its most generous and most murderous impulses. It explains how the Enlightenment dislodged Christianity from its central position in the life of European societies and how man's quest for ecstasy and transcendence flooded into areas such as the arts, spawning the Romantic movement. This dramatic journey which begins in America in 1776 and goes right up to the last agony of the Paris Commune in 1871, takes in the French revolution, the Irish rebellion, the Polish risings, the war of Greek liberation, the Russian insurrection, the Hungarian struggles for freedom, the liberation of South America, and the Italian Risorgimento.' An ambitious and in many ways brilliant book' Hilary Mantel. Waterstones Holy Madness: Romantics, Patriots And Revolutionaries 1776-1871 - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Irish Artisans and Radical Politics, 1776-1820

    Price: £95.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Irish Artisans and Radical Politics, 1776-1820: Apprenticeship to Revolution is a comparative study of the political activities of workers in three Irish cities: Dublin, Belfast and Cork. It investigates how Ireland's journeymen and apprentices engaged in campaigns for political reform, as well as in revolutionary conspiracies, during the years 1776 to 1820. This book marks the first ever attempt to analyse the role of Irish workers in the creation of eighteenth-century republicanism, representing the careful distillation of nearly a decade of research on the topic. It argues that Irish craftsmen truly did serve an 'apprenticeship to revolution'. In the literal sense, the experience of the workshop provided artisans with a set of traditions which shaped how new revolutionary doctrines were received. But generations of Irish workers also served a figurative apprenticeship to successive political movements: the campaigns of Irish 'Patriot' M Ps, the Volunteering movement of the 1770s, and the revolutionary campaigns of the United Irishmen. The book explores the role of urban workers within the 1798 Irish Rebellion and Robert Emmet's 1803 rising and, adopting a transnational framework, places the actions of these Irish artisans within the context of British radicalism and the creation of an industrial working class.
