Review: This is a lovely little book which tracks the 12 days of Christmas through the Tudor period (straying briefly into the reign of James the 1st/6th & the civil war). It shows the origins of many current traditions, and also many Christmas revels that have been discarded over the years due to miserable Monarchs and peevish politicians. This is a season that will not lie down no matter who tries to appropriate or alter it; a feast for all the people: pagan, secular or religious, and any attempt to spoil the fun will always be confounded. It certainly adds value to my festive book collection & is dotted with lovely illustrations throughout, bringing the past to the reader without being over academic. It left me feeling we should demand that greedy supermarkets should be made, by law, to close their doors for a few days and allow their staff some family life. Bring back the full 12 days and let us make merriment and lusty cheer!
