Review: William F Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s novel spawned the cult classic film of the same name and has been watched and loved by many over the years. I have always wanted to read the original novel and at last now I have. There are of course differences between this and the film. It is the future but the world has changed into a dystopian nightmare. When the population was still expanding and food resources were getting smaller changes were made in policies, but this led to discontent and a rebellion. The leader of this, a sixteen year old charismatic changed the lives of all, as the older people were slowly executed and a lifespan of twenty one years was imposed on everyone. For Logan, whose time is running out he is looking for the mythical Sanctuary. As what is known as a Sandman, a person employed to kill those who try to escape their allotted time he has heard the rumours, and also about Ballard, a man who has supposedly lived twice as long as anyone else. With Jessica, a runner, a girl who wants to carry on living the two are trying to find Sanctuary. But does this place really exist, and what are Logan’s ultimate goals? We find out here the history that has made the world into the dystopian place that it is, the technology that keeps things running, the drug usage and sex of the young as they rule, and the inherent violence and hedonism that is bred in such a society. In all this is a fast paced book full of thrills and spills and is ideal for those who love the film but want to know the original story, and those who love dystopian society based tales. With plenty of action and adventure we enter a world that is like ours but frighteningly different in certain ways. A great piece of escapism we follow the cat and mouse game that is played out here.

Review: I didn't like the book half as much. The plot was a bit all over the place. I gave up caring about Logan half way through sigh. If you buy this don't expect to much from it.

Description: A rare, intimate portrait of Hollywood's reigning 'blockbuster auteur' whose deeply personal billion-dollar movies have established him as the most successful director to come out of the British Isles since Alfred Hitchcock. 'A masterclass. brilliant. Immersive, detailed, meticulous, privileged inside-dope.' - Craig Raine More than just the tinkerings of a glass watchmaker, Christopher Nolan's films have an unerring grasp of the way time makes us feel. Time steals people away in his films, and he takes careful note of the theft. Time is Nolan's great antagonist, his lifelong nemesis. He seems almost to take it personally. Written with the full cooperation of Nolan himself, who granted Tom Shone access to never-before-seen photographs, storyboards and sketches, the book is a deep-dive into the director's films, influences, methods and obsessions. Here for the first time is Nolan on his dislocated, transatlantic childhood, how he dreamed up the plot of Inception lying awake one night in his dorm at school, his colour-blindness and its effect on Memento, his obsession with puzzles and optical illusions - and much, much more. Written by one of our most penetrating critics, The Nolan Variations is a landmark study of one of the twenty-first century's most dazzling cinematic artists.' Christopher Nolan is a wonderfully unlikely contemporary filmmaker. We're fortunate indeed to have him, and fortunate now to have this book.' - William Gibson.

Description: Christopher Nolan is the writer and director of Hollywood blockbusters like The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, and also of arthouse films like Memento and Inception. Underlying his staggering commercial success however, is a darker sensibility that questions the veracity of human knowledge, the allure of appearance over reality and the latent disorder in contemporary society. This appreciation of the sinister owes a huge debt to philosophy and especially modern thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Jacques Derrida. Taking a thematic approach to Nolan's oeuvre, Robbie Goh examines how the director's postmodern inclinations manifest themselves in non-linearity, causal agnosticism, the threat of social anarchy and the frequent use of the mise en abyme, while running counter to these are narratives of heroism, moral responsibility and the dignity of human choice. For Goh, Nolan is a 'reluctant postmodernist'. His films reflect the cynicism of the modern world, but with their representation of heroic moral triumphs, they also resist it.
