Review: William F Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s novel spawned the cult classic film of the same name and has been watched and loved by many over the years. I have always wanted to read the original novel and at last now I have. There are of course differences between this and the film. It is the future but the world has changed into a dystopian nightmare. When the population was still expanding and food resources were getting smaller changes were made in policies, but this led to discontent and a rebellion. The leader of this, a sixteen year old charismatic changed the lives of all, as the older people were slowly executed and a lifespan of twenty one years was imposed on everyone. For Logan, whose time is running out he is looking for the mythical Sanctuary. As what is known as a Sandman, a person employed to kill those who try to escape their allotted time he has heard the rumours, and also about Ballard, a man who has supposedly lived twice as long as anyone else. With Jessica, a runner, a girl who wants to carry on living the two are trying to find Sanctuary. But does this place really exist, and what are Logan’s ultimate goals? We find out here the history that has made the world into the dystopian place that it is, the technology that keeps things running, the drug usage and sex of the young as they rule, and the inherent violence and hedonism that is bred in such a society. In all this is a fast paced book full of thrills and spills and is ideal for those who love the film but want to know the original story, and those who love dystopian society based tales. With plenty of action and adventure we enter a world that is like ours but frighteningly different in certain ways. A great piece of escapism we follow the cat and mouse game that is played out here.

Review: I didn't like the book half as much. The plot was a bit all over the place. I gave up caring about Logan half way through sigh. If you buy this don't expect to much from it.
