Review: Ok for a start .. the people giving this one star.. The Author and the Publisher have not hidden the fact on social media that old titles have been revamped and re published. If you have not read any of the Haern/watcher related stories and you are reading my review ...stop this is book 4 go back and start at the beginning (Dance of Cloaks). If you have read the Watcher books before ..get this it has angled the book series leading to future books possible. It's less stand alone and allows the story to move on (also one or two major plot alterations) Yes I read the original .. and for the most part I knew where the story was going (those of you who are getting to book 4 for the first time enjoy the ride) but as I sit down on my lunch break reflecting on how I felt at the end of the story last night ...the important feeling I had was that the watcher can now move on. Through editing and a different slant we now get a bridge from one part of the watchers life to another .. ..at this point your probably thinking ...isn't that the point ..but no. When I finished the original version while entertaining the ending was flat (well as much as David Dalglish books can be) .. Besides a guy in cloaks who is great with blades ..there was no real character development between the Watcher in the series and the Character that is seen in the half Orcs series (Haern is not a central character in that series but is involved some significant parts) .. I do not want to spoil plot lines etc for people who have not read the other series or who will in future. Is it my favourite book he has ever written ...no. It is a very important book all the same.. as it shows the transition for both character and Author (into what I will leave that up to the reader ;-) ) All I will say is this the Author has not developed a new car , he has taken it breathed some life in the engine, given a new exhaust and lowered the suspension a tad ... not only do you want to drive the new version , but you can't wait to drive it again.

  • Waterstones Helen Lewis: Shadows Behind the Dance

    Price: £25.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Helen Lewis' acclaimed memoir, A Time to Speak (Blackstaff Press, Belfast, 1997), tells the story of the first thirty years of her life in Czechoslovakia, from childhood to her professional training as a choreographer and dancer. It also contains her devastating account of Nazi persecution, of loss and suffering in the Holocaust: Helen came very close to death. Maddy Tongue now completes the story of this extraordinary woman who overcame unimaginable suffering to become a creative force in Ireland. The author's friendship with Helen lasted for more than fifty years. As a dancer she performed in many of Helen's significant works. Shadows Behind the Dance describes Helen's creative approach, her struggle to overcome an Irish indifference to modern dance, her pursuit of perfection and her unshakeable belief in humanity. In Ireland today the presence of modern dance owes much to her innovative teaching and practice. Shadows Behind the Dance is supplemented with Chris Agee's 2002 interview with Helen, An Irish Epilogue, and a folio of Holocaust poems and drawings by Michael Longley and Sarah Longley (who was a pupil of Helen's). Helen's sons, Robin and Michael, have also written a Foreword. The book has been generously funded through subscription by family, friends, colleagues and admirers of the unforgettable Helen Lewis. • Waterstones Lighting Dance

    Price: £36.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Lighting Dance pioneers the discussion of the ability of lighting design to foreground shadow in dance performances. Through a series of experiments integrating light, shadow, and improvised dance movement, it highlights and analyses what it advances as an innovative expression of shadow in dance as an alternative to more conventional approaches to lighting design. Different art forms, such as painting, film, and dance pieces from Loie Fuller, the Russell Maliphant Dance Company, Elevenplay, Pilobolus, and the Tao Dance Theater served to inspire and contextualise the study. From lighting to psychology, from reviews to academic books, shadows are examined as a symbolic and manipulative entity. The book also presents the dance solo Sombreiro, which was created to echo the experiments with light, shadow, and movement aligned to an interpretation of cultural shadow (Jung 1954, in Samuels, Shorter, and Plaut 1986; Casement 2006; Ramos 2004; Stein 2004; and others). The historical development of lighting within dance practices is also outlined, providing a valuable resource for lighting designers, dance practitioners, and theatre goers interested in the visuality of dance performances.
