Review: A little less rhythmic than Rosie Revere Engineer, but a very decent story with a good exploration of searching for answers. Little one likes to make a bigger deal out of stinky socks since getting into this book.

Review: I read this to my children with high hopes because of the rave reviews and stickers telling me about it being a best seller and all the plaudits it had received. The kids were excited to read about a girl scientist, because they both have an interest in science and nature. But unlike most of the other reviewers, it just felt flat to me. There were charming things about this book. The illustrations are great, it is positive to have a young black girl full of curiosity as the main character, there is a nice range of children included in the class, and the rhymes and vocabulary are fun. However, the plot was really disappointing - the toddler is late to learn to speak and then asks loads of questions and makes loads of mess (which seemed like a nice start), then she decides to find the source of a stink and it all goes downhill. She looks at the cabbage soup, then sprays the cat with perfume, then when sent to think about being cruel to the cat by sitting on a chair in the hallway she draws all over the walls, and the conclusion is that her parents decide to join in with her experiments more. So there is no discovery, no reward for her curiosity, no description of experiments or any scientific methodology, no information gathered and no resolution for the reader about the smell, meanwhile the child has no instruction, no boundaries, no inspiration, and no consequences for her behaviour. She didn't learn anything, and we didn't learn anything. The ending was anticlimactic and there was no take away message to pursue your dreams or to encourage girls into science. I wasn't super impressed by the other book in the series that we read (Rosie Revere, Engineer), but this one was worse because of the weak plot and lack of any character development or outcome. I came away feeling that it was just a poem spread over a picture book for young children and nothing extraordinary. I definitely think that it was pitched at younger or less able children than my seven year olds.
