Review: I felt like I'd been punched in the gut when Jack Starbright died at the end of the last AR book, so imagine my delight at seeing a new Alex adventure that hinted right away that this may not be true...However, to write a fair and balanced review of a series I loved as a kid and am now coming back to as a young adult, I feel the following are worth pointing out: The good: As with every AR - plot and pacing. These books could be adapted to Hollywood, no problem (let's just not talk about the film of Stormbreaker, shall we?) Spoiler alert: Jack being alive. I kind of admired the chutzpah Horowitz showed in killing her off - showing that Alex' enemies are truly ruthless, end of his childhood etc, but she's ma fave, so I was very glad she was brought back. The meh: The criminals/their plan. I mean, you can't come upwith showstopping baddies all the time, but these guys felt kinda ..average. Like, they wouldn't be asked to join Mensa for Villains. Overall I only found them mildly creepy instead of horrifying. Mind you, after Razim... The bad: My main carp with Horowitz's writing: he explains too much. Please, please don't treat your readers as though they are incapable of googling what a particular martial art is, and please do not break the momentum of a fight scene to explain what aikido is. I learned best as a teen from books that forced me to look things up. Also, character development. I read these books for the plot, as characterisation is pretty thin on the ground. I've always felt I know about Alex, rather than knowing him - again, a result of telling, not showing. We are rarely given much access to Alex's inner world, his thoughts and feelings - e.g the amount of PTSD he must be suffering by now! Horowitz can characterise well, as Russian Roulette proves (I loved Yassen's story!) but would love, after this many books, to see some character development. Sabina. Look, if you're going to write in a romance, make it interesting. Sabina is about as interesting as a cardboard box, frankly. Why can't Alex fall for a sassy badass his age *cough* Juliet Butler *cough* or at least have some sort of feelings about his relationship (for want of a better word) with Sabina ending? She serves pretty much no purpose in this book especially. Anyway. Ranting aside, I did actually enjoy this book, bjt as ever, I would enjoy them more if the characters leapt off the page more. Harsh feedback from a longtime fan, I know, but I mean it constructively! If you're an Alex fan, this is a decent addition. If not - start with Stormbreaker, or you may be put off.
