Review: Nothing bad and such a gripping and tension filled book that you have to read although it's a shame there isn't a third book

Review: Firstly I just want to say how much I love this cover! It’s so striking and sure to catch the attention of many a young reader. This is the second book in the Alfie Bloom series. The first is Alfie Bloom and the Secrets of Hexbridge Castle and introduces us to Alfie before he is whisked off on a huge adventure to learn more about where he comes from. I haven’t actually read this first book so I went into Alfie Bloom and the Talisman Thief without much of a clue about who Alfie was and what he was going to get up to! However this is definitely readable as a standalone as Gabrielle does a good job of filling in the gaps about who characters are and what has happened previously (although I really want to go back and read the first one now! ) I don’t think there was any point that I was sitting there thinking, ‘huh?!’ which was great. I imagine too that if you’ve read the first one then the little reminders of who everyone is will help! In this instalment, the butler of Alfie’s castle, Ashford, is kidnapped in the middle of the night and the castle comes under siege from a magical enemy. Alfie, using all his super awesomeness, needs to defend the castle and protect his friends and family inside. Can he do it? Or is the enemy too strong to beat? This was a really fun read! I can imagine children really enjoying this and getting totally involved in Alfie’s world. I’ve seen it described as being perfect for fans of Harry Potter or Roald Dahl and I think they are fair comparisons; there’s certainly an air of magic, mystery and silliness too it which definitely appeals. Gabrielle has truly mastered the art of writing for a young audience without being patronising. Sometimes you can read children’s books that feel a little over simplified but I definitely didn’t feel that with this one at all. I also thought it was perfectly paced and would make for some great bedtime reading; whether that’s a child reading this on their own or having it read to them. A really enjoyable, magical story that will delight and inspire children; full of great characters, lots of action and plenty of adventure!
