Review: I own a number of Rachel Allen books but I’d say that this is my favourite- it’s certainly my most used. The recipes are clear, easy to follow and have all given excellent results to date. Ingredients are easy to come by too. I like that there’s a mixture of sweet & savory recipes (although I must confess that the sweet ones are my preference- I love baking sweet treats). There’s no modern miso/ yuzu type exotic ingredients so if that’s the vibe you’re looking for, this isn’t the book for you but for comforting home baking (think: date bars, wonderful blondies, flapjacks & cookies to name just a few!), look no further.

Review: Having watched a couple of the TV episodes that this book accompanies I wanted to try some of the recipes for myself. Rachel Allen can use quite flowery language on television however her discriptions of each recipe are just enough to make you feel nostalgic and reaching for the flour tin. The carrot cake recipe is already a favourite and we have been inspired to try out some of the bread recipes on our next baking day. Her suggestions for altering some of the recipes add another dimension to the book, and she has included some basics such as shortcrust pastry at the end if you need then. Buy this book if you are looking for traditional family home baking recipes, nothing too fancy just baking you can enjoy with your family, bake whilst making your Sunday lunch or use to teach your children.
