Review: I am an actor working in the UK who is originally from a non-English speaking country. Clarity of delivery has always been an issue for me. I have at least 7 pronunciation books and I must say this is the best ever. This is really through yet easy to read and understand. Especially I love the intonation patterns in the last. I can't recommend this book more.

Review: Better English Pronunciation is still widely used as a textbook on pronunciation designed for foreign students. The first edition of this book dates from 1967 and, at that time, it was probably the best introduction to English pronunciation available. Although the revised edition dates from 1980, its changes were limited to its design and the transcription of English sounds. The latter is one of its weaknesses as, although it uses many of the International Phonetic Alphabet symbols, it is not entirely consistent in this. It was probably directed at the foreign students who had achieved a good level of academic English without much exposure to native English speakers. Although promoted as self-study book for Intermediate and Advanced level students, it contains a great deal of detailed text, written to a standard that not every Intermediate level student could read with ease. I have used this with Intermediate level ESOL classes, but find that there are now more modern textbook on pronunciation that have better layout and graphics, and which are more accessible to Intermediate level students.
