Description: In this book, David Harvey takes a look at Birmingham city transport in the Coronation year of 1953, covering the city's buses and trams. He starts by giving a brief overview of Birmingham in 1953 and then goes on to examine the Birmingham bus network, starting off by showing buses decorated for the Coronation and amid Birmingham's wider celebrations. The focus then shifts to the switch-over from trams to buses, first concentrating on the buses that took over from the trams, and then on the trams themselves. David pays particular attention to the final tram routes operating in the city, and then to the final day of operations and the very last trams. He also shows the scrapping of the trams. In this wonderful collection of photographs, some of which have never been published before, David Harvey gives a unique view of Birmingham in 1953, a period of great change in the city, and the country as a whole. Description: Although Birmingham has been a city from the time when Queen Victoria granted city status in 1889 most citizens (Brummies) still refer to Birmingham as a town. When visiting Birmingham city centre from the suburbs the journey is generally known as 'going up town' never down or across, always up. Various attractions have drawn people to Birmingham over the centuries however the most consistent has been to the area of St Martin's Church that includes, following its establishment in 1166 by Peter de Birmingham, the markets. Buildings and venues that change any city centre are recorded in the memory of those that have experienced them. Now a number of changes made to the centre of Birmingham over the last 100 years are also recorded and through the medium of photography, illustrated in this book, providing a permanent history of Birmingham (up town). • Waterstones Seeing Birmingham by Tram Volume I

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: From 1907 to 1953, Birmingham Corporation's trams provided an efficient and praiseworthy public transport service throughout the city, carrying millions of passengers during that time. Based on the twenty-eight tram routes in operation during 1937 (a representative year with trams operating in all parts of the city except the south-west sector), readers of this book are taken pictorially on a variety of tram journeys, places and points of interest being identified on the way. In their heyday, trams travelled along all the main directions of a Birmingham compass, moving through densely populated, highly industrialised inner suburbs to leafier outer suburbs, to places of work, places of entertainment and to the busy, bustling city centre. In short, an entertaining kaleidoscope of images is placed on show. Waterstones Seeing Birmingham by Tram Volume I - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: From the mid-1930s, many of the Birmingham City Transport bus fleet were stored pending disposal. Once sold, many were taken to scrapyards and broken up while some of the better ones were sold for further use. In this book, author David Harvey looks at these three scenarios up until the 1980s, though the main period was between 1947 until 1965 when there was still a large market for second-hand Birmingham buses that were generally still in excellent condition. Many of the photographs have never been seen before - especially those taken in the huge vehicle 'dump' at Holford Drive, Perry Barr. Breaking-up locations such as scrap merchants at Oldbury, Great Barr and Stratford are a sad reminder of the way unwanted buses were unceremoniously broken up. A happier end result is seen with the buses that escaped, with many going to independent operators in Scotland while some were even exported to Cyprus. Description: Birmingham has a tradition of individualism and experimentation, giving rise to a fragmented but innovative culture. This applies to the city's contemporary music scene just as it does to the rest of its cultural heritage, which explains why the Birmingham sound is hard to define. Whereas other cities are known for a certain sound, this city celebrates its diversity. In this new decade, the plethora of exciting indie bands, sick rappers and emotive singer-songwriters are surrounded by a collective of D Js, producers, promoters, venues, bloggers and vloggers who promote them. There's an agglomeration building, coalescing around the Birmingham Music Awards, whose mission is to amplify this uprising to the world. In this book, Stephen Pennell's reviews and musings shine a light on Birmingham's finest up-and-coming performers playing the city's most iconic venues, taking us on a unique journey around Birmingham's music scene. • Waterstones Birmingham in Photographs

    Price: £17.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Birmingham is Britain's second largest city. Lying in the heart of the West Midlands, the centre of the canal network and close to coal mining areas, the city became the leading manufacturing city in the world during the Industrial Revolution with its myriad specialised and innovative workshops. Its industrial heartland was devastated by aerial bombardment during the Second World War and post-war redevelopment turned against much of Birmingham's Victorian heritage. Large areas were rebuilt in a modern style, opened up to the car, and Victorian brick terraces were swept away, but in recent years the city has seen another wave of redevelopment, demolishing post-war structures such as the Bullring shopping centre and New Street station, and renovating sites of industrial heritage such as the old canal area. Today it is a vibrant, modern cultural centre in the heart of England. In this book photographer Dave Jennings celebrates the new face of Birmingham in a collection of stunning images that portray not just the new buildings that characterise modern Birmingham but also how the older industrial-era city survives - often turned to new uses. For all those who are proud to live and work in Birmingham, as well as those visiting, this book is a must. Look through these photographs and you will quickly see the fascination of this changing city. Waterstones Birmingham in Photographs - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
