Description: The Black Country has more miles of canal than Venice. During the industrial revolution this transport system developed to serve the steel, coal, lime and glass industries that grew up so extensively. Now much of the area's heavy industry has disappeared, but many of the canals remain - to be utilised as an integral part of the Black Country's thriving tourist industry. Black Country Canals includes a wide range of photographs, many previously unpublished, and is accompanied by fascinating and informative captions which combine to illustrate the canals in their heyday and more recently. The book is sure to appeal to all who live in or visit the Black Country, and to transport historians everywhere.

  • Waterstones The Birmingham Canal Navigations Through Time

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Birmingham canals truly got underway following an advertisement in Birmingham's Aris's Gazette of 26 January 1767. The plan was to take a waterway from Wolverhampton to Birmingham with a branch to Lord Dudley's coal mines near Wednesbury, and this canal network continued to grow extensively until the 1860s. With the decline in the demand for coal after the Second World War, the BCN lost sixty of its miles, but it has nevertheless largely survived to the present day. R. H. Davies, author of Canal Crimes, takes the reader on a journey from Birmingham along the main line canal through Tipton and Oldbury, exploring the Dudley and Stourbridge canals, and continuing on to Walsall and Wolverhampton. He concludes with images of canals that have vanished over time and of the Black Country Living Museum, which preserves aspects of life in the Black Country that would otherwise be lost. Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Black Country in the West Midlands currently covers the four metropolitan boroughs of Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Sandwell. The area became famous as a centre of manufacturing following the birth of the Industrial Revolution but there is much more to the area than its industrial heritage, although that has undoubtedly played a strong part in forging the shared history and identity of the area. 50 Gems of the Black Country takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the highlights of the area, which has many diverse attractions from its pre-Industrial Revolution history, through the legacy of coal mining and other mineral extraction, iron and steel works and other heavy manufacturing and the canals that aided these industries, to more recent attractions. Author John Shipley explores the many places, and their history, that make this part of the West Midlands so distinctive.

Tom Larkin and other members of the Black Country Memories Club have long been determined that the way of life, sacrifices and hardships, and daily activities should not be allowed to be forgotten, and this book achieves their aim. Tom Larkin looks at the Black Country from the working-class point of view and records the significant contribution which these people made to the economic stability of the country as a whole. • Waterstones A-Z of The Black Country

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Black Country can be something of an enigma. Where exactly is it and how did it acquire such a name? The answers to these questions and many more besides can be found within the pages of this book. Andrew Homer takes readers on an A to Z journey discovering some of the significant events, influential people and fascinating places that define the area known as the Black Country. From its geological origins under a shallow tropical sea through to more recent history such as the Gunpowder Plot and beyond, stories abound; stories of the men and women who helped to forge the Industrial Revolution, of remarkable inventions and of world firsts that occurred right here. Who would have thought that landscape gardening originated in such an industrialised area or that this landlocked region had such important connections with the sea? Fully illustrated with both historic and contemporary pictures, most of which are in colour, A-Z of the Black Country will appeal to both visitors to our area and those who regard themselves as 'Black Country born and bred'. • Waterstones Canals of Britain

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Canals of Britain is the most comprehensive and absorbing survey of Britain's canal network ever published. It provides a fascinating insight into the linked up waterways as well as the isolated cuts and quiet waters which may not be fully navigable by larger craft. Infinitely varied, it passes picturesque open countryside, wild moorland, coastal harbours, historic industrial buildings, modern city centres, canalside public houses and abundant wildlife. Stuart Fisher looks at every aspect of the canals - their construction, rich history, stunning scenery, heritage, incredible engineering, impressive architecture and even their associated folklore, wildlife and art. Enticing photographs give a flavour of each place and places of interest close to the canals are included. Each canal is intricately mapped. For those who are keen to explore that little bit further, the book goes to points beyond which others usually turn back, with information on little-known parts of the system, offering a new insight into this country's unique, surprising and beautiful canal network. Attractive, inspiring and also a practical guide, Canals of Britain has proved very popular with walkers, cyclists, narrowboaters, canoeists, kayakers and others wanting to get the most out of Britain's canals. This fourth edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect the ever-changing landscape of Britain's canals, and includes many new colour photographs to help bring them to life.

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This is Ned Williams and the Mount Pleasant Local History Group's third book about Quarry Bank and this time they take a fresh look at this little Black Country township, plus the even smaller place next door - simply known as The Delph. The area covered is part of the modern Metropolitan Borough of Dudley - the capital of the Black Country. All human life was to be found in these communities of colliers, brickyard workers and bucket-bashers before the days when motorists roared by on their way to the Merry Hill Shopping Centre.
