Review: Although famous for his character James Bond most people seem to overlook this book, the only children’s novel that Ian Fleming wrote. Based on the stories that he used to tell his son, Caspar, the original inspiration was as the note in the front of the book says the cars built by Count Louis Zborowski, who was an engineer and racing driver. If you have only ever seen the well known film that was made of this then you should be warned that there are significant differences between the two. Unfortunately for the author he died before this came into print, and I don’t know what he would have made of the mixed reviews that were received in the Press. Fleming was not a serious children’s book writer, but his style does work well here giving this a very light heated and fun feel, and with his knowledge of cliff-hangers from his adult work he quite capably incorporated such here. In this book we meet the Pott family, father Caractacus, mother Mimsie, and the children Jemima and Jeremy. When the dad sells his new sweet formula so the family for the first time have enough money to buy a car, but after looking in the showrooms instead buy a rundown automobile that is going to be scrapped. And thus this car is brought lovingly back to life, and whether before or just feeling generous to its new owners so the vehicle seems to add its own specifications which can be quite surprising. Finding out what the car can do so the family get into some problems, especially when they run into a gang of thieves. With the children kidnapped and a daring robbery being brought into play can the car, with the parents save the day? This is still very much a fun read and I can still vaguely remember being read this at primary school whilst fudge was being handed around. Good enough to read to little ones as a bedtime tale this is great when they can read for themselves, even more so because of the lovely illustrations throughout. In all this is still a wonderful tale, and even as an adult and when stuck in a traffic jam I always wish the car I was in could just take off and fly over it all.

Review: This brought back some amazing memories. A lot different from the film, it tells the story of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the magical flying, sailing car who comes alive and, in this adventure saves her owner's two children from smugglers. There are other adventures, written by a different author than Ian Fleming (he of James Bond fame) but this is the original. A short but beautiful read that will keep adults and children entertained for a short while.

Description: Constantly entertaining. So much here to amuse and inform' Observer' These friendly, knockabout letters are a treat' Sunday Telegraph' Irresistible' New York Times ___ Before the world-famous Bond films came the world-famous novels. This book tells the story of the man who wrote them and how he created spy fiction's most compelling hero. In August 1952, Ian Fleming bought a gold-plated typewriter as a present to himself for finishing his first novel, Casino Royale. It marked in glamorous style the arrival of James Bond, agent 007, and the start of a career that saw Fleming become one of the world's most celebrated thriller writers. Before his death in 1964 he produced fourteen bestselling Bond books, two works of non-fiction and the famous children's story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. Fleming's output was matched by an equally energetic flow of letters. He wrote constantly, to his wife, publisher, editors, fans, critics and friends, including Raymond Chandler, Noel Coward and Somerset Maugham. His letters - witty and charming, funny and revealing - chart 007's progress: from badgering his publisher about his quota of free copies to apologising to readers for having mistaken a certain brand of perfume and for equipping Bond with the wrong kind of gun. Collected here together by his nephew, the letters provide a fascinating insight into the mind of the man who created a worldwide sensation.' Description: 'Enthralling. an essential read, particularly for fans of 007.' - Cinema Retro'When Harry Met Cubby is a fitting tribute to two extraordinary men. If you love behind the scenes stories about the making of movies, there's plenty of drama to sate you here.' - Entertainment Focus Albert R. 'Cubby' Broccoli and Harry Saltzman remain the most successful producing partnership in movie history. Together they were responsible for the phenomenally successful James Bond series; separately they brought kitchen-sink drama to the screen, made a star out of Michael Caine in the Harry Palmer films and were responsible for the children's classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. But their relationship was fraught almost from the very beginning. With such contrasting personalities, their interactions often span out of control. They managed to drive away their coveted star, Sean Connery, and ultimately each other. Loved and hated in equal measure, respected and feared by their contemporaries, few people have loomed as large over the film industry as Broccoli and Saltzman, yet their lives went in very different directions. Broccoli was feted as Hollywood royalty, whereas Saltzman ended up a forgotten recluse. When Harry Met Cubby charts the changing fortunes and clashing personalities of two titans of the big screen.

Description: Show-business legend Dick Van Dyke is living proof that life does get better the longer you live it. Who better to offer instruction, advice, and humour than someone who's entering his ninth decade with a jaunty two-step? Van Dyke isn't just a born song-and-dance man his irrepressible belief in embracing the moment and unleashing his inner child has proved to be the ultimate elixir of youth. When he was injured during the filming of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, his doctor warned him he'd be using a walker within seven years, but Dick performed a soft shoe right there and never looked back. In Keep Moving, Dick Van Dyke offers his own playful anecdotes and advice, as well as insights from his brother, actor Jerry Van Dyke his friend and creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Carl Reiner and other spirited friends and family. Whether he's describing the pleasure he takes in his habitual visits to the grocery store how he met his late-in-life-love Arlene or how he sprung back, livelier than ever, from a near-death experience, Dick's optimistic outlook is an invigorating tonic for anyone who needs a reminder that life should be lived with enthusiasm despite what the calendar says. You don't have to act your age. You don't even have to feel it. And if it does attempt to elbow its way into your life, you do not have to pay attention. If I am out shopping and hear music playing in a store, I start to dance. If I want to sing, I sing. I read books and get excited about new ideas. I enjoy myself. I don't think about the way I am supposed to act at my age - or at any age. As far as I know, there is no manual for old age. There is no test you have to pass. There is no way you have to behave. There is no such thing as'age appropriate.' When people ask my secret to staying youthful at an age when getting up and down from your chair on your own is considered an accomplishment, you know what I tell them?' Keep moving.'- Dick Van Dyke.
