Description: Waterstones Children's Laureate Lauren Child's best-selling first novel, introducing Clarice Bean to a whole new audience. This is me, Clarice Bean. I'm not an only child, but sometimes I wish I was. The story revisits Clarice's family, and introduces Ruby Redfort, ace girl detective and star of Clarice's favourite books. Ruby is always going on exciting adventures, but all Clarice gets to do is go to the local shop on her own. But when Clarice and her best friend, Betty Moody, decide to do their school project on the Ruby Redfort books, they suddenly start finding mysteries everywhere. Review: This is a delightful book for children of approx 7+. Clarice Bean is our heroine, whose day to day struggles at school and home will ring a bell for all children. There are annoying siblings, moaning parents, teachers who constantly try to drag poor Clarice out of her imagined world and back into the classroom to learn boring facts, and the stress of a class project – for which she just cannot come up with a suitable theme… The answer, of course, is under Clarice’s nose all the time and lies with her obsession with the Ruby Redfort books. Ruby Redfort is a fictional girl detective, for which Lauren Child later wrote an entire series of books of her own, presumably because she had so much fun with the snippets included in this book. Lauren Child has long been one of my favourite authors for children and I have brought her books from the time she released her first picture book. I am pleased to see that she has made the transition to chapter books with ease; bringing her quirky characters and humour to a storyline which will appeal to all little girls who like books such as, “Daisy and the trouble with….” It was also a joy to have a character in Clarice Bean who, like my daughter, is obsessed by books. Charming, funny and realistic – we have ordered the rest of the series, along with the Ruby Redfort books, and look forward to reading on.
