Review: Just recommend this book - preaching to the converted probably, but her story needs to heard if you are in any way interested in the history of the "stonemasters" era.

Review: This book is nice in that it provides a nice overview of climbing history and of course, Lynn Hill's climbing life. Two things that bothered me: (1) she writes many climbing stories that did not actually happen to her, and appear elsewhere, and I'm not sure this incorporation of other people's stories is done well. (2) she kept writing throughout the book how a major climbing accident led to her reflection on her life. She wrote she felt selfish, concentrating on herself having fun (or something along these lines). However, at no point in the book it seems like she changes anything about the way she does things. She may have, but it does not appear in the text, and it is bothersome for the reader. Also, I did not finish the book since it became boring at the end, a repetition of "and then I wanted to climb this type of cliffs and I found this opportunity to do so". It was a nice read for the most of it, it just that I was left remembering the negative stuff.

Description: Long overdue anthology highlights women in Yosemite climbing history. - Climbing Magazine Contributors include Lynn Hill, Steph Davis, Liz Robbins, Beth Rodden, Kate Rutherford, Katie Brown and more Introduction by Mari Gingery Author is deeply connected with the Valley community through her work with Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR) Though long overlooked, women have always been at the center of Yosemite--climbing, crafting equipment, and establishing new routes. In Valley of Giants, editor and climber Lauren De Launay Miller pulls together journal excerpts, original essays, interviews, archival materials, and memorable firsts that span the past century of climbing in the Valley. This first-ever collection of both famed and untold stories from women at the heart of Yosemite climbing gathers almost 40 contributors, from Bea Vogel who forged her own pitons to Molly Higgins who participated in the first all-female ascent of the Nose on El Capitan to Liz Robbins who established routes in Yosemite Valley during the Golden Age. Astonishing Stonemasters like Lynn Hill, as well as many other notable climbers, including Steph Davis, Kate Rutherford, Beth Rodden, Chelsea Griffie, Libby Sauter, and more share their recollections of the exhilaration they felt up on the wall and the determination it took to get there. As Mari Gingery, one of the first women to climb the Shield on El Cap, writes in the foreword, the stories feature a medley of intrepid female characters who offer fresh perspectives. Organized into five distinct eras in Yosemite climbing history, this groundbreaking anthology captures a range of stories from heartbreaking losses to soaring joys, trip reports of significant ascents to moments that convey the larger essence of the Valley--and what it means to call this iconic place home.

    Price: £12.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: 'A compelling read. Zofia's fearless approach to climbing history sees them take on the status quo, effortlessly shining a light on under-represented topics - women/gender, elitism, the average climber - and bringing climbing right up to the current day. The perfect addition to any climbing backpack!' - Sasha Di Giulian Climbing is one of the world's fastest-growing sports - exciting, addictive and, arguably, much more fun than going to the gym. In 2021 it made its long-awaited Olympic debut, but its journey to Tokyo has been anything but traditional. And the traditionalists would argue that it's not even a sport at all . In Born to Climb, anthropologist and climber Zofia Reych shares with us the fascinating cultural history of rock and competition climbing. Zofia offers a fresh perspective on some of the pivotal moments and outstanding individuals of the sport, from eighteenth-century exploratory forays on rock, via the rise of climbing legends such as Emilio Comici, Wolfgang Guellich and Lynn Hill, to the limelight of the Olympic arena for the stars of today - Janja Garnbret, Adam Ondra, Shauna Coxsey and more. But Born to Climb is much more than a celebration of the sport's famous people and places: it is an examination of modern sporting participation and culture, interwoven with the author's own climbing journey. While the writing is engaging and often funny, Zofia is not afraid to broach sensitive and often overlooked topics, including gender divide, capitalism and the tension between aesthetic and athletic approaches to climbing, in what is a must-read for all climbers.
