Review: Fantastic book - very well written and will recommend it to friends who are looking for alternative natural health supplements and not having to rely upon drugs with side effects. Review: For about 8 months, I have been using coconut oil regularly in my cooking and baking since reading this book, which is supposed to be based on research. Although high in saturated fat (different brands vary between 78 -89%), I was convinced by all the research that, because coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid, it would not raise my cholesterol and was actually good for the heart. Well quite frankly, I can now tell you that this is a lie! Not only did it raise my cholesterol seriously high, which previously was only slightly high, but it dramatically raised my bad cholesterol, LDL, which previously was in the normal range. This brought my good cholesterol, HDL, quite low which previously was slightly high. You may be aware that high LDL and low HDL is a very bad ratio and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. I am actually very underweight, but it did not cause me to gain weight, which I was hoping, as it is supposed to be good for managing a healthy weight. I also still had extra virgin olive oil and butter in my diet but less than usual because of the increase of coconut oil. I have spoken to my doctor who agreed the coconut oil could be the only cause in this dramatic change in my cholesterol levels. She told me if I don't stop taking it, my cholesterol will continue to rise as it accumulates in the arteries. I dread to think how much money I have spent on this stuff, thinking it was healthy! I am so furious with Bruce Fife for deceiving me!!!! Therefore I would not recommend this book or for anyone to consume coconut oil on a regular basis. Save your money! If you have been consuming coconut oil on a regular basis, I strongly urge you to ask your doctor to do a cholesterol test. I would only recommend using coconut oil as a hair or skin treatment.
