Review: Pat, like my Mum (also called Pat) was born in 1923. Like my Mum she joined up as soon as she could, age 16, and had many similar experiences, so it was very much like reading a family history. The two sisters interleave their experiences, with Jean, as the younger, only joining up later in the war. Having read much about Enigma and Bletchley Park, it was interesting to learn of the station Y end of things, where encrypted messages were so painstakingly intercepted. Also later on, to learn of the real life 'James Bond' in wartime Italy and Yugoslavia. This was ordinary life in the wartime for two young, well brought up farmers daughters. Their dad also suffered the trauma of being a Japanese POW for 4 long years, somehow surviving. A good read for anyone interested in the day to day of WW II life for those who supported the front line troops, and all the crazy improvisation of Brits in wartime.

Review: I bought this because of its title, and the pre-release publicity, which implies that these two sisters were codebreakers who, in 1939, 'answered the call of duty', stopped at nothing 'to help crack the Enigma code', and went on a 'top-secret mission' which saw 'the tide of war turn in Britain's favour'. I do not doubt their loyalty and eagerness to serve their country, but in 1939, Patricia was only 16, and Jean was only 14. Patricia subsequently joined with the WRNS in 1942, aged 19, and Jean joined the FANYs in 1943. In different ways, both served in Intelligence, but neither 'answered the call of duty' in 1939, neither was a codebreaker and neither was sent on a 'top-secret mission'. The book is an interesting record of what these young women did do for their country, and I fully admire and respect them for that, but the publicity (and the back cover of the book itself), make exaggerated and misleading claims.
