Review: This was a pleasant surprise. When I heard that this book was yet ANOTHER fairy-tale retelling, I couldn't help but roll my eyes as my expectations became instantly lowered. However, once I began reading I was hooked... In short, it's a actually a very sweet love story that occurs between two people that for different reasons, believe that they are not worthy of love. A story of acceptance and redemption if you will. And who doesn't love that? The relationship between Nyx and Ignifex was suitably slow-building and unlike many other fairy-tale retellings, did not need to rely on excessively graphic sex scenes in order to convey the feelings that they had for each other. What I really liked about their relationship was the strange dynamic of the whole thing. Nyx makes no secret of her disdain and mistrust of Ignifex and he in turn does not try to disguise the fact that he is ultimately keeping her there against her will and is perfectly accepting of the fact that she would kill him if he gave her the chance. The whole thing is very strange but once you get past that there is something very touching about the connection that the two of them share. My only issue with this book is that I occasionally found some of the Greek mythology connotations quite difficult to follow (although that may be more of a reflection on me than the book itself) and I think that there is a risk of readers becoming confused if they are not already familiar with a lot of the stories from Greek mythology (but then again, maybe that's just me). I also felt that there weren't enough likeable characters in the book, although this may well be the whole point of Cruel Beauty. All throughout the book I permanently wanted to slap Nyxs' sister and I felt that her father never really got the proper comeuppance that he deserved. Demons aside, the human characters were just awful. I also thought that Nyx was waaaaay too hard on herself. At the end of the day, her father sold her to an evil demon king from birth and then expected her to assassinate him in the process. She has every right to be angry! Overall, I didn't enjoy Cruel Beauty anywhere near as much as the other "Beauty and the Beast" retelling, A Court of Thorns and Roses (which is now one of my all time favourites) but I did enjoy it far more than I thought I would. It's fast-paced, highly enjoyable and in my opinion has a lovely message about loving each and every part of a person, despite their flaws. A solid four stars.
