Review: My three-year-old and I have read a few of these from the library, and he always enjoys George's escapades. Each gives readers a glimpse of a tempting but slightly unfamiliar location/situation (toy shop! chocolate factory!), and here George joins a class of schoolchildren on a trip to the fire station. This allows us to see around ourselves of course, and as usual, the curious little guy becomes too interested in something and ends up going on a callout with a fire crew. Reassuringly, though we see a 'real' fire, it's a small one and George is able to play a role in calming down some upset children with his antics. And instead of being told off for going with them, he ends up being congratulated and given a small reward. Though I do wonder if this would encourage any children to also be 'curious' and go against what adults tell them, he really is never misbehaved, or naughty on purpose. And he always does try to help others. There's a very nostalgic look to these books, and an American leaning with the look of the fire engines, baseball and some terminology. It doesn't spoil anything at all, but gives a chance to say that different words are used in different countries. The formula works well, it's comforting with cute pictures of Americana and one for ages 3-6.
