Review: Based upon true events, this is a thrilling story of what could have happened when cabin boy Syms Covington became Mr Darwin's assistant during a voyage to the Galapagos Islands on the legendary HMS Beagle. After a violent storm, Syms finds himself alone and shipwrecked upon an island, and is followed by a mysterious creature that he assumes is some sort of lizard, who he names Farthing. The scenes on the island are genuinely thrilling as Syms struggles to survive the threats and hazards of his new environment. After many adventures, he manages to find his way way back to Darwin and Victorian England with Farthing and some strange looking eggs. I don't want to share too much more in case I spoil the story, but what follows is a powerful exploration of science, belief and survival, as Syms struggles to help his new friend survive the hostile environment of a cold, damp England, where a creature that no one believes in will never be truly free. Lindsay Galvin has such an authentic and compelling historical voice in this novel, that you will find yourself pulled along by the story and captured by Syms and his belief in the impossible. Darwin and Queen Victoria are both convincingly reimagined as the young, passionate people they once must have been, rather than the grey-haired, bearded and be-crowned images most children are familiar with. It is such a beautifully produced book, with fold out maps and illustrations, including useful historical timelines and biographies and links to resources that will make this book perfect for schools or lockdown home learning. But it is the relationship between Syms and his beloved Farthing that is at the heart of this story, and I hope that this book, like Farthing, will find its wings and fly. Highly recommended.

Review: This book was purchased to supplement some science learning about evolution. It is based on the real journey of Darwin to the Galapagos but from the point of view of a cabin boy. The story itself it fiction but with many historical facts thrown in. The fly sheets are beautiful or full of interesting images and text. It is an interesting read and would appeal to children in year 6 studying evolution or Charles Darwin, children who love dragons, or children who enjoy a good adventure story.
