Description: The history of Ireland for much of the Twentieth century is the history of Eamon De Valera. From the 1916 Rising, the troubled Treaty negotiations and the Civil War, right through to his retirement after longer in power than any other twentieth century leader, de Valera has both defined and divided Ireland. He was directly responsible for the Irish Constitution, Fianna Fail (the largest Irish political party) and the Irish Press Group. He helped create a political church-state monolith with continuing implications for Northern Ireland, the social role of women, the Irish language and the hole concept of an Irish nation. Many of the challenges he confronted are still troubling the peace of Ireland and of Britain, and some of the problems are his legacy. For de Valera was a world figure who attempted to confine his nation of disciples to the narrowest of cultural and intellectual horizons.

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Éamon de Valera is the most remarkable man in the history of modern Ireland. Much as Churchill personified British resistance to Hitler and de Gaulle personified the freedom of France, de Valera personified Irish independence. From his emergence in the aftermath of the 1916 rebellion as the republican leader, he bestrode Irish politics like a colossus for more than fifty years. On the eve of the centenary of the Irish Revolution, one of Ireland's most eminent historians explains why Éamon de Valera was such a divisive figure that he has never - until now - received the recognition he deserves. This biography reconciles an acknowledgement of de Valera's catastrophic failure in 1921-22, when his petulant rejection of the Anglo-Irish Treaty shaped the dimensions of a bloody civil war, with an appreciation of his subsequent greatness as the statesman who single-handedly severed the ties with Britain and defined nationalist Ireland's sense of itself.

  • Waterstones Judging Dev: A Reassessment of the Life and Legacy of Eamon De Valera

    Price: £28.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Eamon de Valera is the most controversial figure in modern Irish history and as this book argues, the most misunderstood. 'Dev' has been characterised as a stern, un-bending, devious and divisive politician, in scholarship and in popular culture. Here, Diarmaid Ferriter investigates the far more complex personal and public identities of the revolutionary fighter, Fianna Fáil party founder, taoiseach (prime minister) and president who reimagined the state both literally, in its first constitution, and figuratively, offering a much mocked vision of Ireland as a pre-industrial, pastoral island. Ferriter presents an in-depth analysis of De Valera using previously unpublished letters, government documents and photographs to chronicle his long and remarkable career. One such letter contradicts the conventional wisdom that de Valera escaped execution in 1916 because of his American citizenship, offering the leader's personal account of events. Engagingly written and tactile to hold, Judging Dev won four prestigious Irish book awards and awakened a national conversation through a parallel RTE radio series and RIA exhibition. When an Irish taoiseach launched this book in 2007 it was fittingly said it would be 'equally invaluable in classroom, in college and in the home'. • Waterstones Dorothy Macardle

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Dorothy Macardle - literary teacher, propagandist journalist, political playwright, gothic fiction novelist - is a multi-faceted woman who has remained too often below the radar of historical recognition. In Dorothy Macardle Leeann Lane intends to change this. She is most remembered as the author of The Irish Republic (1937): a full-scale history of the revolutionary period from an anti-Treaty perspective commissioned by de Valera. A bestseller, it became the definitive book of the period fixing Macardle's reputation for too long as merely de Valera's mouthpiece. Yet, as Leann Lane puts forth, Macardle was much more than its author. An intellectually strong, politically persuasive and stoically independent woman: Macardle was beholden to no one. From Sinn Fein propagandist to the gradualist republicanism of Fianna Fail to ardent feminist and gothic novelist, Macardle's personal and political evolution is mapped out for us by Lane in the pages of this book. Exploring her Jail Journal as first-hand source material, the early evolution of Macardle's political thought and action is revealed to us. The wealth of new archival material in the Bureau of Military History Witness Statements and the Military Service Pension Collection is deeply examined, presenting a who's who of Irish republican history as we learn about the many people and events that influenced Macardle's life. Central to the story is an analysis of the commitment of Macardle to female activist politics as she moves further from de Valera's reach, often expressed in subterranean or subversive ways. Macardle's opposition to the position of women in the 1936 Conditions of Employment Act and, most particularly, in the 1937 Constitution was not overt on political platforms but Lane reveals to us that a deep criticism is contained within the pages of her gothic novels published in the 1940s. Insightful readings of her later writing, including her most influential novels The Uninvited (1942) and The Unforeseen (1946), showcases Macardle as a short story writer, playwright and gothic novelist of republican and feminist intent. This is a rich biographical journey through Dorothy Macardle's writing as propagandist, social commentator, republican and feminist. It affirms Macardle's place as one of the foremost activist polemicists as the new Irish State unchained itself from its colonial past and asserted an independent political and cultural identity to be reckoned with.

    4 out of 5 stars

    50 ratings

Description: 1950s Ireland was the age of De Valera and John Charles Mc Quaid. It was the age before television, Vatican II, and home central heating. A time when motor cars and public telephones had wind-up handles, when boys wore short trousers and girls wore ribbons, when nuns wore white bonnets and priests wore black hats in church. To the young people of today, the 1950s seem like another age. But for those who played, learned and worked at this time, this era feels like just yesterday. This delightful collection of memories will appeal to all who grew up in 1950s Ireland and will jog memories about all aspects of life as it was. 4.6 out of 5 stars

Description: Waterstones Irish Book of the Month for September 2022. We Don't Know Ourselves is a very personal vision of recent Irish history from the year of O' Toole's birth, 1958, down to the present. Ireland has changed almost out of recognition during those decades, and Fintan O' Toole's life coincides with that arc of transformation. The book is a brilliant interweaving of memories (though this is emphatically not a memoir) and engrossing social and historical narrative. This was the era of Eamon de Valera, Jack Lynch, Charles Haughey and John Charles Mc Quaid, of sectarian civil war in the North and the Pope's triumphant visit in 1979, but also of those who began to speak out against the ruling consensus - feminists, advocates for the rights of children, gay men and women coming out of the shadows. We Don't Know Ourselves is an essential book for anyone who wishes to understand modern Ireland.

  • Waterstones Harry Boland

    Price: £17.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The definitive story of Harry Boland, the ardent and prominent Republican, loyal confidant to de Valera and close friend and, later, love rival to Michael Collins for the heart of Kitty Kiernan. This is a detailed and dramatic account of the intricate part played by him in Ireland's struggle towards independence. Covering Boland's role in the 1916 Rising, his involvement with Sinn Féin and work in the 1918 general election, through his time in America during the War of Independence, when he came to national prominence campaigning for American support for Irish freedom, it also details Boland's subsequent return to a broken homeland on the cusp of civil war and his ill-fated attempts to stop the worst from happening. A free Irish Republic meant everything to Harry Boland, and he was to give his all to try to make this reality.
