Review: This is an enchanting and beautifully illustrated book about a little girl's correspondence with a mermaid, and the search for a lost key. The ongoing story is told on the book's pages, but each letter is seperate and tucked in it's own little envelope, adding a secret and magical element to the experience. There are challenges and other bits and pieces in the envelopes, too! My friend's 3-year-old daughter loves mermaids and this book was an instant hit with her, though obviously it has to be read to her and she needs help to open up the envelopes. I'm sure older girls (6 to 9 years) would also adore the story and would no doubt get more out of the letters and puzzles, and would be able to read and re-read it on their own, too.

Review: This is a lovely story, and a lovely idea, which captivated my daughter. The one-star rating is for the overall experience - unfortunately, in the copy we bought from The Book House, via Amazon, the final little envelope in the book was torn, and the mermaid pendant, which should have been enclosed, was missing. Obviously this is a big disappointment for a six-year-old, especially as the point of the book is the excitement of opening all the little envelopes throughout. The book appears to be out of print, so, if buying, please ensure that the copy is intact to avoid disappointing your child.
