Description: Joseph Frank's award-winning, five-volume Dostoevsky is widely recognized as the best biography of the writer in any language--and one of the greatest literary biographies of the past half-century. Now Frank's monumental, 2500-page work has been skillfully abridged and condensed in this single, highly readable volume with a new preface by the author. Carefully preserving the original work's acclaimed narrative style and combination of biography, intellectual history, and literary criticism, Dostoevsky: A Writer in His Time illuminates the writer's works--from his first novel Poor Folk to Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov--by setting them in their personal, historical, and above all ideological context. More than a biography in the usual sense, this is a cultural history of nineteenth-century Russia, providing both a rich picture of the world in which Dostoevsky lived and a major reinterpretation of his life and work.

Review: Joseph Frank has done a fantastic job in collecting information on Dostoyevsky's life and also the letters he personally wrote to friends and family. Frank weaves these letters and into the retelling of Dostoyevsky's life, giving the reader an extremely deeper insight into the influential russian's life. It isn't merely a biography, Frank allows the readers to understand how his life influenced his novels and moral convictions which he would portray in his masterpieces. On the side of a biography, Frank provides material such as Dostoyevsky's personal letters and notes into the book, such content which is extremely difficult to attain, and definitely not available on the internet. Frank starts from the family background of Dostoyevsky's parents, to his birth, childhood, study in the academy for mechanics, his pursuit as a novelist, mock execution, exile in siberia, finding God, after the exile, finding the love of his life, his gambling addiction, struggle in poverty, trips abroad to Europe, development of his minor and major novels and last but not least his influence on Russian society and the impact of his death. Any fan of Dostoyevsky that would love to know the fascinating journey which he took should definitely buy this book. On the side of a literary analysis/critique, Frank yet again does an amazing job. He analyses the concepts and themes which Dostoyevsky portrays in most of his novels, definitely his major novels and shows how his early works would slowly develop into his major masterpieces. Frank allows the reader to understand the deeper meanings and messages Dostoyevsky attempts to leave with the reader. The emphasis on faith and reason, christian love, morality's existence, nihilism, and so much more is explored here and Frank certainly gives a deeper insight into Dostoyevsky's novels. Before reading this I read various short story's by Dostoyevsky, his 3 major novels (Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Brothers Karamazov) and I would certainly recommend reading these 3 major pieces plus 'Notes from Underground' (and also 'the devils') before reading this book, or you can always skip the chapters which analyse the novels you haven't read yet. The size of the book is quite intimidating (932 pages), just like Dostoyevsky's major novels but don't be scared to read it! Slowly and surely you'll finish it and it'll be worth the read in the end, I promise! Highly recommended for anyone who has a great interest in Dostoyevsky and his works. (:

Waterstones Dostoevsky in Love

Price: £10.99

Brand: Waterstones

Description: A daring and mesmerizing twist on the art of biography' - Douglas Smith, author of Rasputin: The Biography' Anyone who loves [ Dostoevsky's] novels will be fascinated by this book' - Sue Prideaux, author of I Am Dynamite! A Life of Friedrich Nietzsche Dostoevsky's life was marked by brilliance and brutality. Sentenced to death as a young revolutionary, he survived mock execution and Siberian exile to live through a time of seismic change in Russia, eventually being accepted into the Tsar's inner circle. He had three great love affairs, each overshadowed by debilitating epilepsy and addiction to gambling. Somehow, amidst all this, he found time to write short stories, journalism and novels such as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov, works now recognised as among the finest ever written. In Dostoevsky in Love Alex Christofi weaves carefully chosen excerpts of the author's work with the historical context to form an illuminating and often surprising whole. The result is a novelistic life that immerses the reader in a grand vista of Dostoevsky's world: from the Siberian prison camp to the gambling halls of Europe; from the dank prison cells of the Tsar's fortress to the refined salons of St Petersburg. Along the way, Christofi relates the stories of the three women whose lives were so deeply intertwined with Dostoevsky's: the consumptive widow Maria; the impetuous Polina who had visions of assassinating the Tsar; and the faithful stenographer Anna, who did so much to secure his literary legacy. Reading between the lines of his fiction, Christofi reconstructs the memoir Dostoevsky might have written had life - and literary stardom - not intervened. He gives us a new portrait of the artist as never before seen: a shy but devoted lover, an empathetic friend of the people, a loyal brother and friend, and a writer able to penetrate to the very depths of the human soul.

Description: This book is not only a major twentieth-century contribution to Dostoevsky's studies, but also one of the most important theories of the novel produced in our century. As a modern reinterpretation of poetics, it bears comparison with Aristotle.' Bakhtin's statement on the dialogical nature of artistic creation, and his differentiation of this from a history of monological commentary, is profoundly original and illuminating. This is a classic work on Dostoevsky and a statement of importance to critical theory." Edward Wasiolek' Concentrating on the particular features of 'Dostoevskian discourse,' how Dostoevsky structures a hero and a plot, and what it means to write dialogically, Bakhtin concludes with a major theoretical statement on dialogue as a category of language. One of the most important theories of the novel in this century." The Bloomsbury Review. Waterstones Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Conversations with Dostoevsky

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Conversations with Dostoevsky presents a series of fictional conversations taking place between November 2018 and Spring 2019 in the narrator's Glasgow apartment and elsewhere in the city. At the beginning of the conversations, the narrator has been reading Dostoevsky's story A Gentle Spirit, which concludes with a dramatic statement of protest atheism. This statement suggests that love is not possible in a purely mechanical universe in which all living beings are condemned to death and ultimate extinction. The conversations spell out Dostoevsky's response to this view and his advocacy of faith in God, Christ, and immortality. The themes discussed include suicide, truth and lies, guilt, determinism, literature, the Bible, Mary, Christ, Dostoevsky and film, 'the woman question', nationalism, war, the Church, the Jewish question, immortality, and God. In addition to conversations between the narrator and Dostoevsky, we drop in on a dinner party at which Dostoevsky is discussed from various points of view and in another conversation Dostoevsky is joined by the philosopher Vladimir Solovyov to discuss nationalism, the Church, and life. We also attend a seminar on 'Dostoevsky, Anti-Semitism, and Nazism', and visit Glasgow's Necropolis on Easter Eve. The conversations in the first part of the volume are accompanied by a series of commentaries in a second part, which contextualize the issues discussed in the conversations with references to his novels, journalism, letters, and notebooks as well as engaging the relevant critical literature.
