Description: Joseph Frank's award-winning, five-volume Dostoevsky is widely recognized as the best biography of the writer in any language--and one of the greatest literary biographies of the past half-century. Now Frank's monumental, 2500-page work has been skillfully abridged and condensed in this single, highly readable volume with a new preface by the author. Carefully preserving the original work's acclaimed narrative style and combination of biography, intellectual history, and literary criticism, Dostoevsky: A Writer in His Time illuminates the writer's works--from his first novel Poor Folk to Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov--by setting them in their personal, historical, and above all ideological context. More than a biography in the usual sense, this is a cultural history of nineteenth-century Russia, providing both a rich picture of the world in which Dostoevsky lived and a major reinterpretation of his life and work.

Review: Joseph Frank has done a fantastic job in collecting information on Dostoyevsky's life and also the letters he personally wrote to friends and family. Frank weaves these letters and into the retelling of Dostoyevsky's life, giving the reader an extremely deeper insight into the influential russian's life. It isn't merely a biography, Frank allows the readers to understand how his life influenced his novels and moral convictions which he would portray in his masterpieces. On the side of a biography, Frank provides material such as Dostoyevsky's personal letters and notes into the book, such content which is extremely difficult to attain, and definitely not available on the internet. Frank starts from the family background of Dostoyevsky's parents, to his birth, childhood, study in the academy for mechanics, his pursuit as a novelist, mock execution, exile in siberia, finding God, after the exile, finding the love of his life, his gambling addiction, struggle in poverty, trips abroad to Europe, development of his minor and major novels and last but not least his influence on Russian society and the impact of his death. Any fan of Dostoyevsky that would love to know the fascinating journey which he took should definitely buy this book. On the side of a literary analysis/critique, Frank yet again does an amazing job. He analyses the concepts and themes which Dostoyevsky portrays in most of his novels, definitely his major novels and shows how his early works would slowly develop into his major masterpieces. Frank allows the reader to understand the deeper meanings and messages Dostoyevsky attempts to leave with the reader. The emphasis on faith and reason, christian love, morality's existence, nihilism, and so much more is explored here and Frank certainly gives a deeper insight into Dostoyevsky's novels. Before reading this I read various short story's by Dostoyevsky, his 3 major novels (Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Brothers Karamazov) and I would certainly recommend reading these 3 major pieces plus 'Notes from Underground' (and also 'the devils') before reading this book, or you can always skip the chapters which analyse the novels you haven't read yet. The size of the book is quite intimidating (932 pages), just like Dostoyevsky's major novels but don't be scared to read it! Slowly and surely you'll finish it and it'll be worth the read in the end, I promise! Highly recommended for anyone who has a great interest in Dostoyevsky and his works. (:
