Review: I read all Emil books aloud to two of my boys when they were too young to read them independently. I found them absolutely hilarious in a really gentle, witty way. Emil has a kind of irrepressible, even charismatic, appeal and he ends up getting into all kinds of improbable, slapstick dramas. Lindgren is a genius of the understated: she implies all sorts of things about the other characters that really flesh out the family dynamics. Deft, masterful story telling. Appropriate for girls or boys, age 5 or 6 in understanding; age 8+ reading independently. (For the record, I like them slightly more than Karlsson books though they complement the Pippi Longstocking books very well. She is also outrageous.)
