Review: Emily is a most interesting character! A girl with a great imagination and great determination who wants to write. Her childhood was unusual - her first years, happy with her beloved father - then her life changes drastically when her father dies and her relations have to decide who will look after her - while Emily hides under the table to hear what they have to say! Emily's thoughts about her relation's comments about her make most amusing reading. Then she appears. . . ! Emily ends up being looked after by Aunt Elizabeth and Aunt Laura, two very different characters. We read about how Emily settles - with difficulty - into life at New Moon. We are with her as she meets cousin Jimmy and others, and hears about the Lost Diamond. We are with her as she starts school - and meets Ilse, a wild little girl who becomes Emily's friend. We hear about Ilse's father and the tragedy in his life. Then Emily writes - and writes - about everything that happens to her - in her own unique way. And things start happening! There is much more I could write, but all I will add is that this is a great book about a real character of a girl and the interesting - sometimes remarkable - experiences she has.

Description: Emily Starr has never known what it is to be unloved. But when her father dies, she is left in the care of her mother's family. Emily is a stranger to the proud Murrays, none of whom think they can cope with such a heartbroken, headstrong girl. They decide to draw lots for her, and Emily is sent to live at New Moon with stern Aunt Elizabeth, the head of the clan. Kind Aunt Laura and friendly, eccentric Cousin Jimmy also live at New Moon, though, so she is not without hope. Emily is enchanted by New Moon, but cannot believe she will ever belong there. With her lively imagination and dreams of being a famous writer, she seems to have a talent for scandalising her family. Before long, though, she has made firm friends: Ilse, a tomboy with a blazing temper, Teddy, an aspiring artist, and Perry, the ambitious houseboy. She brings so much life to New Moon, perhaps one day even Aunt Elizabeth will consider herself lucky to have 'won' Emily. Description: Emily never imagined Aunt Elizabeth would allow her to go to high school in Shrewsbury, and she's thrilled, especially as her close friends Ilse, Teddy and Perry will be there. But there are certain conditions: for the whole three years Emily must board with hateful Aunt Ruth, and she must promise to stop writing stories. To Emily, this is unthinkable, but she wants an education, and reluctantly agrees. With the move from her beloved home at New Moon to Aunt Ruth's house, Emily's world is turned upside down. Not only must she prove herself at school, despite rejection and jealousy, but she can no longer count on her friends. Her happy childhood friendships - especially with Teddy and Perry - start to turn into something more complicated and in a small-town, the merest hint of gossip can cause scandal. Description: ' Montgomery's photographs capture the reality of Americans in crisis, in all our flawed, tragic, ridiculous glory." | ?? Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty American Mirror is award-winning photographer Philip Montgomery's dramatic chronicle of the United States at a time of profound change. Through his intimate and powerful reporting and a signature black-and-white style, Montgomery reveals the fault lines in American society, from police violence and the opioid addiction crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic and the demonstrations in support of Black lives. Yet in his unflinching images, we also see moments of grace and sacrifice, glimmers of solidarity and tireless advocates for democracy. Like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans before him, Montgomery has made an unforgettable testament of a nation at a crossroads.
