Description: Photography has always been about experimentation, and anyone who thinks the advent of digital imaging might have stopped photographers from inventing new ways to impress their film is in for a big surprise. Experimental Photography presents the most interesting and creative modifications for low-cost film cameras, manual printing techniques and unconventional use of the medium. The book accompanies the reader through the world of photography special effects and manipulations documenting techniques, approaches, experimenters, camera makers and their extraordinary creations. One picture at a time, Experimental Photography compiles a manifesto against visual homogenization.

Review: The book arrived quickly and the content is interesting (although not mind blowing), it's a great starter book for experimenting photography, or to refresh your knowledge on the terminology of different techniques. The only reason I'm not giving it a four or five star is that the book itself arrived faulty. The end pages at the start of the book weren't cut or stuck down properly. And while this doesn't affect reading the book, it does look really scruffy and I'm someone that usually takes massive care of my books so it does bug me. This probably wouldn't bug someone else though, and I imagine it was just this copy affected.

Description: I have an old camera with which I have taken countless photographs of myself. It often produces astonishing effects, Edvard Munch states in a 1930 interview. Someday when I am old and have nothing better to do than work on an autobiography, all my photographic self-portraits will see the light of day again. The autobiography was never realised, but the self-portraits have found their way to the pages of The Experimental Self. The Photography of Edvard Munch, which demonstrates the fundamentally experimental nature of the artist's photographic practice. As a photographer, Munch embraced the freedom provided by the amateur position, and the unpredictable aspects of analogue photographic technology. By playfully approaching his own image in picture after picture, Munch extends his explorations of self-hood in other media through photography. The resulting photographs provide unique access to Munch's radical artistic vision, which this book studies through eminent essays by Patricia G. Berman, Tom Gunning and Mary Claire Pappas. .

  • Waterstones Hippolyte Bayard and the Invention of Photography

    Price: £55.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Hippolyte Bayard (1801-1887) is often characterized as an underdog in the early history of photography. From the outset, his contribution to the invention of the medium was eclipsed by others such as Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre (1787-1851) and William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877). However, Bayard had an undeniable role in the birth of photography and its subsequent evolution into a form of art. He was a pioneer in artistic style, innovator in terms of practice, and teacher of the next generation of photographers. Alongside an exploration of Bayard's decades-long career and lasting impact, this volume presents-for the first time in print-some of the earliest photographs in existence. An album containing nearly 200 images, 145 of those by or attributed to Bayard, is among the Getty Museum's rarest and most treasured photographic holdings. Few prints have ever been seen in person due to the extreme light sensitivity of Bayard's experimental processes, making this an essential reference for scholars and enthusiasts of the very beginnings of photography. At last we have a comprehensive book in the English language about one of the most interesting of photography's pioneers. Incessantly experimental and an omnivorous picture maker, Hippolyte Bayard is a photographer who has stood the test of time: as this copiously illustrated book demonstrates, his work is as fascinating today as it was in the nineteenth century.-Geoffrey Batchen, Professor of the History of Art, University of Oxford This marvelous volume, the first of its kind in English, combines comprehensive archival research on the elusive Bayard with penetrating short essays on individual photographs. With its meticulously researched chapters by Bayard experts and gorgeous illustrations that canstand in for those of the photographs that are now too fragile to exhibit, this book is a windfall to historians of photography. It is not an exaggeration to say the field has been waiting years for a publication like this. In addition to its scholarly contribution, this book will be a revelation to any lover of photography. -Laurie Dahlberg, Associate Professor, Program in Art History and Photography, Bard College' Illuminating Bayard through his social connections, self-contradictions, and critical fortune, this essential volume brings to light a key figure in the invention of photography too long relegated to the shadows. Most significantly, Bayard is revealed through his lifework of photographs, most from the Getty album and many published here for the first time." | ?? Stephen C.
