The box is followed by a winged mechanical horse that whisks him off to meet his long-lost uncle and his penguin helpers, Finn, Bill and Jackson. And who else will he find there.?.

Review: Mysterious flying lunchboxes, dastardly plots and school on a pirate ship are just three aspects of Fergus Crane that hooked my six year old boy and eight year old girl on this Far-Flung Adventure. Lessons are unusual for Fergus and his friends on the School Ship Betty-Jeanne. Fergus only learns why when his night-time visits from a flying metal horse and magic lunchbox lead him to his long-lost inventor Uncle Theo and his talking penguin helpers. In his quiet, brave way Fergus leaves his mum to save his friends from certain death. After all, what else could he do? This first book in the Far-Flung Adventure series brings a cast of flamboyant characters together with pirates, intrigue and whimsy to create a story that pulls you into Fergus' world and keeps you there, children and adults alike. Chris Riddell's delicious illustrations add the perfect finishing touch. Fergus Crane will appeal to 6-8 year olds who enjoy a good quest mixed with fantasy and mystery. 5-7 year olds will also love hearing and looking at it for their bedtime story. There is a lot of detail and descriptive language, particularly at the beginning, which will draw in older readers, but younger or less confident readers may need help getting into the story. If you like finding a new series your child enjoys, be warned you may be under-whelmed by Corby Flood, the following book in the series. The end of Fergus Crane implies the penguins get the next adventure, but we spent much of Corby Flood wondering when Fergus or the penguins would make an appearance. They don't, directly, and I felt the second story lacked the impact of the first, and didn't engage my children nearly as well. Fingers crossed the third installment, Hugo Pepper, is back to Fergus' high standard.
