Description: Fifty Railways that Changed the Course of History is a fascinating and beautifully presented guide to the train lines and rail companies that have had the greatest impact on modern civilization. Entries range from the Metropolitan Line of the London Underground, the world's first underground railway, to the Pacific Railroad, the first transcontinental railroad in North America. In order to justify the assertion that they literally 'changed the course of history,' each railway is judged by its influence in five categories: Engineering, Society, commerce, Politics, and Military. Review: Thus was a gift. I do not know what the recipient thought if it but the little I saw when I looked through it before wrapping it was good and interesting.

Review: According to the biographical note Bil Laws is a journalist and gardening writer, and it shows in this poorly written book. There is no shortage of railway books on the market, many written by experts, so I do not recommend this book. The choice of railways to fit the 50 chapters format is sometimes obscure and sometimes includes more than one subject shoehorned into one section. At times misleading (confusing the High Speed 1 railway line with the Eurostar service) and at other times simply wrong (the Talyllyn Railway did not reopen in1976,it never closed) and with a few typos thrown in this is a book to avoid.

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The history of East Shropshire has had a global impact, with Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale acknowledged as the 'Cradle of the Industrial Revolution'. In this book, local industrial history expert Neil Clarke examines through photographs the history of the railways in this area, which both came from the Industrial Revolution and enabled its growth, through the rapid expansion of the nineteenth century and the Grouping and the Beeching Axe of the twentieth century to the present day. Everything, from the first wagonways (early railways) to individual branch lines of the area, is examined using both old photographs and drawings and modern photographs to show the development of railways in the area. This area of Shropshire has changed beyond all recognition, as the harsh lines of industry have been replaced with greenery, yet the remnants of its industrial past can still be seen, especially through its railways. Description: From the Stone Age to the present day, no technology has had a more profound impact on mankind than watercraft. Boats and ships made possible the settlement and conquest of new worlds. They determined the victors of history-changing wars and aided the spread of new philosophies, technologies and religions. Even today, virtually everything we purchase and consume depends on seaborne trade. 'Ships that Changed History' is more than just a delight for lovers of the sea - it's a virtual history of the world told through the boats and ships that influenced how and where people lived, the ideas they exchanged and how they won and lost the battles that set the course of later generations and millennia. Beautifully illustrated with art and photographs, it is a guide to how men and women went to sea in every age and place. • Waterstones Railways and The Raj

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: India was the jewel in the crown of the British Empire, an Empire that needed a rail network to facilitate its exploitation and reflect its ambition. But, by building India's railways, Britain radically changed the nation and unwittingly planted the seed of independence. As Indians were made to travel in poor conditions and were barred from the better paid railway jobs a stirring of resentment and nationalist sentiment grew. The Indian Railways network remains one of the largest in the world, serving over 25 million passengers each day. In this expertly told history, Christian Wolmar reveals the full story, from the railway's beginnings to the present day, and examines the chequered role this institution has played in Indian history and the creation of today's modern state. • Waterstones Fifty Years Since the End of Steam

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Steam on Britain's railways ended in 1968 - and the fifty years since have been a period of controversy and debate; has it been a time of progress and development, or under-investment and political meddling? Some would say that Beeching's cuts led to an era of corporate monotony, whereas others would claim that the last half century has witnessed remarkable technological advancements, with innovations like the HST 125 and Crossrail. Taking an often controversial viewpoint, and utilising a wealth of images, author Mark Lee Inman explores the rapid changes made on Britain's railways over the last half century, decade by decade, considering whether it really has been a period of progress, from the end of steam right up to Crossrail, Class 88s and beyond. • Waterstones Railways of Wales in the 1960s

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The beauty of its mountain and coastal scenery has always made the railways of North Wales special. During the 1960s, as fast as steam was fading on the main lines, it was flourishing on the narrow gauge railways, hinting at the great potential that was to come. Those fledgling railways that are today's major tourist attractions possessed a special, rudimentary charm as they came to terms with the challenges of gearing up for a new army of admirers. This book takes you on a tour in essays and colour pictures of all the narrow gauge railways then in operation and also the British Rail routes that were facing an uncertain future. John Evans brings his unique way with words and pictures to capture a scene that has in many ways changed dramatically . and meets some veteran locomotives that we can still enjoy today.
