Review: The second instalment of the Finlay Donovan series sees the return of Elle Cosimano's wit and rapid plot progression. At the end of the first novel we are left on tenterhooks wondering what will come of the bounty that has been placed on the head of Finlay's impulsive ex-husband, Steven. Finlay and her best friend/live-in babysitter are once again in murky waters as they try to protect Finlay's children from the mystery assassin, navigate the Russian mob, and tackle a new dead body. I enjoyed reading this book and easily read large chunks of it in one sitting; Cosimano's writing-style is engaging and there are very few scenes that don't drive the plot and leave you keen to read the next chapter. I did however find this novel's plot to be less organised than the last, with many new characters being introduced or made reference to. I also have mixed feelings about Finlay's love interest, Officer Nick Anthony, who lets far more of Finlay's criminal behaviour pass than he should and whose pursuit of Finlay borders on a little creepy. Overall, I would recommend this novel and am excited to read the third instalment next year. While I enjoyed the first novel more than this one, Cosimano's depiction of the main characters and the trouble that they find themselves in are enough to make this an enjoyable read.
