Description: Lie detection, offender profiling, jury selection, insanity in the law, predicting the risk of re-offending, the minds of serial killers and many other topics that fill news and fiction are all aspects of the rapidly developing area of scientific psychology broadly known as Forensic Psychology. Forensic Psychology: A Very Short Introduction discusses all the aspects of psychology that are relevant to the legal and criminal process as a whole. It includes explanations of criminal behaviour and criminality, including the role of mental disorder in crime, and discusses how forensic psychology contributes to helping investigate the crime and catching the perpetrators. It also explains how psychologists provide guidance to all those involved in civil and criminal court proceedings, including both the police and the accused, and what expert testimony can be provided by a psychologist about the offender at the trial. Finally, David Canter examines how forensic psychology is used, particularly in prisons, to help in the management, treatment and rehabilitation of offenders, once they have been convicted. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Review: Easy to read and a very informative book. Read it before starting my Msc in Investigative Psychology by David Canter. I enjoyed reading this introduction book. it gave a very good overview of what the field of forensic psychology is and what it is not. He makes a point (about 5 or 6 times) about how it is not like TV shows. I get the feeling he is tired of answering reports asking him to provide "profiles". The book is largely dedicated to how forensic psyc actually works within the legal system. If you are looking for a book about profiling then this is not it. this book focuses on what forensic psychologists actually do and were the field is going in the future. If you have the impression that it's like shows like "criminal behavior" or "csi" then this book will open your eyes to reality. If you are interested in profiling and profiling techniques this book doesn't cover anything like that (read Dan Korem instead). The only reason I didn't give the full 5 stars is that this book is from one man's perspective. Although he is a famous and well respected Dr of Psyc, for an introductory book his opinions bled through a lot. That didn't take away from it, and it was a really interesting read.

Review: For a book that consists of little over 100 pages, how can there be so many printing errors? Double printed text, and, on some pages, whole missing segments of text, make this book physically hard to read. See photos. Regardless of the printing errors, the content is rather dull and only really looks at forensic psychology as a whole, not at particular aspects. Perhaps this is my mistake for misinterpreting the contents of the book when ordering it. For anyone who is considering ordering this book - don't. You could easily Google forensic psychology for 10 minutes and you would easily gain the same, if not more, information regarding forenic psychology found in this book. For anyone with a general interest in psychology, I can thoroughly recommend "Influence" by Robert Cialdini.
