Description: It was in Paris in 1927, at an exhibition dedicated to Picasso, that Francis Bacon grasped his vocation as a painter. In 1946, he moved to Monaco on the French Riviera where he lived for four years, his time in the Principality marking a turning point in his art; with his popes series, he became a painter of the human figure. In Paris he befriended artists and intellectuals, such as Giacometti and Leiris, whilst the city would become the setting for the crystalisation of his reputation in 1971 with the retrospective at the Grand Palais. In 1975, Bacon would take a studio in the Marais district. This bilingual publication co-published by Albin Michel and The Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation tells of Bacon s deep ties with France and Monaco, and has been overseen by Martin Harrison, author of Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonne and curator of the coinciding exhibition Francis Bacon, Monaco et la culture franc aise which runs at Grimaldi Forum, Monaco from 2 July 2016 until 4 September 2. Price: £28.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Bacon and the Mind sheds light on Francis Bacon's art by exploring his motivations, and in so doing opens up new ways of understanding his paintings through three pillars; art, neuroscience and psychology. This beautiful book is comprised of five essays, illustrated in colour throughout by Francis Bacon's works. It is the first in a brand new series of books, Francis Bacon Studies, that seeks to illuminate Francis Bacon's art and motivations. The first essay, by Christopher Bucklow, argues compellingly that Bacon does not depict the reality of his subjects, but rather their reality for him - in his memory, in his sensibility, and in his private world of sensations and ideas. Steven Jaron's essay questions the psychological implications of Bacon's habitual language, his obsession with 'the wound', with vulnerability and the nervous system. Jaron's deconstruction of Bacon's visual imagination results in revealing insights into the man and his work. Darian Leader's long-time fascination with Bacon's paintings predates his powerful BBC documentary, In the Name of the Father? (1996). His contribution to this book, presents the latest of his fresh and stimulating insights into the artist. The focus in John Onians's contribution explores the effect of Bacon's non-conscious mental processes in the creation of his paintings.'The 'Visual Shock" of Francis Bacon: An essay in Neuroaesthetics' is a newly edited and now fully illustrated re-presentation of an article by Semir Zeki and Tomohiro Ishizu, previously accessible only online. Martin Harrison, Editor of Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonné, edits the book and contributes the Preface and Afterword. The Estate of Francis Bacon Publishing, supported by Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation Monaco, in association with Thames & Hudson.

Description: The extraordinarily revealing interviews with Francis Bacon conducted over a period of 25 years by the distinguished art critic David Sylvester amount to a unique statement by Bacon on his art and on art in general. In the book, a classic of its kind, Bacon considers the problems of realism and sheds new light on aspects of his life. With a rare and brilliant use of language, Bacon talks about his aims as a painter and ways in which he works, responding always with vivacity and candour to Sylvester's searching questions. Bacon's obsessive effort to record and re-create the human form, his practice of making variation on old masters' painting and on photographs, his dependence on chance, and his views about the way in which his work has been interpreted are only some of the many subjects discussed and investigated in depth during these historic encounters. • Waterstones Inside Francis Bacon

    Price: £28.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The third instalment in the Bacon Estate's groundbreaking series discloses the most exciting new research and information to emerge in many years on this elusive artist. Three of the essays, by Francesca Pipe, Sophie Pretorius and Martin Harrison, are based on archives recently added to the collection of the Estate of Francis Bacon. Very little is known about Bacon's early career, and the diaries of his two first patrons provide a far deeper understanding of his formative years than has been accessible hitherto. Especially revelatory are the extensive records kept over a long period by Bacon's doctor, Paul Brass: what they reveal will revolutionise thinking on Bacon. Sarah Whitfield sheds new light on both Bonnard and Bacon; she has identified concerns the two artists shared that will surprise as well as enlighten. Joyce Townsend draws on her scientific and technical investigations into Tate's most important Bacon paintings to advance significant new information about Bacon's methods. Christopher Bucklow is an expert on Japanese art, which forms an important, if unexpected, aspect of his rethinking of the metaphor system in Bacon's paintings.
