Review: This must be one of Heyer's very early books. The plot is very simplistic, as are the characters. Nothing much happens, except for ludicrously short scrapes and a very tedious subplot with a hysterical, overwrought suitor. The two main characters are childish, immature, one-dimensional and quite annoying to those of us who appreciate more in-depth characterisation. Other reviewers have pointed out the husband's disturbing physical abuse - I think the author was trying to show that the characters are still bickering children, but that isn't an excuse. This is a 24-year man bullying a 16 year old innocent, and she is completely in his power as wife and orphan. I truly disliked this book - I suggest Frederica, Grand Sophy, Regency Buck or other later books. I bought this Used - Good Condition, and the book arrived promptly and in excellent condition from the supplier.
