Review: Overall we have loved these books so far, we are on the third one in the series. We read them to our 6 year old who loves space and math. He loves the stories and there's lots of real science thrown in. All great things. I was horrified when I read one line in particular last night, a male character, George, was feeling jealous because his female friend (possibly has a crush? I'm not sure the age of the kids) was talking to another boy and was smiling at him and then: "George wanted to pull her hair quite sharply, just to wipe that look of her face". Like I said, overall, really enjoyable, but I'm really glad I am reading them out loud to my son so I could skip over that horrendous line. You may want to pre-read and talk to your kids about certain content, I'm not sure what else is hidden in there.

Description: Was there a beginning of time? Could time run backwards? Is the universe infinite or does it have boundaries? These are just some of the questions considered in an internationally acclaimed masterpiece by one of the world's greatest thinkers. Following his passing in March 2018, Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time will continue to forever stand as his gift to the world. Few books have carried such a siesmic impact, opening millions of minds to the deep cosmos in language that is both succinct and clear. It begins by reviewing the great theories of the cosmos from Newton to Einstein, before delving into the secrets which still lie at the heart of space and time, from the Big Bang to black holes, via spiral galaxies and strong theory. This edition includes updates from Stephen Hawking with his thoughts about the No Boundary Proposal and offers new information about dark energy, the information paradox, eternal inflation, the microwave background radiation observations, and the discovery of gravitational waves. It was published to accompany the launch of a new app, Stephen Hawking's Pocket Universe. One of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein, Professor Stephen Hawking was the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. His bestselling publications included: A Brief History of Time, The Grand Design, A Briefer History of Time as well as a series of books for children, co-authored with his daughter Lucy Hawking, beginning with George's Secret Key to the Universe. Description: An ideal introduction [to Stephen Hawking]' - Independent' Astonishingly comprehensive - clearer than Hawking himself' - Focus Stephen Hawking was a world-famous physicist with a cameo in The Simpsons on his CV, but outside of his academic field his work was little understood. To the public he was a tragic figure - a brilliant scientist and author of the 9 million-copy-selling A Brief History of Time, and yet spent the majority of his life confined to a wheelchair and almost completely paralysed. Hawking's major contribution to science was to integrate the two great theories of 20th-century physics: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. J.P. Mc Evoy and Oscar Zarate's brilliant graphic guide explores Hawking's life, the evolution of his work from his days as a student, and his breathtaking discoveries about where these fundamental laws break down or overlap, such as on the edge of a Black Hole or at the origin of the Universe itself. Description: Professor Stephen Hawking was a brilliant theoretical physicist, an influential author and thinker, and a great popular communicator. Throughout his career he was asked questions by business leaders, politicians, entrepreneurs, academics and the general public on a broad range of subjects, from the origins of the universe to the future of the planet. Brief Answers to the Big Questions brings together his thinking on the most timeless and the most-timely questions in science: Where did we come from? What is inside a black hole? Is there other intelligent life in the universe? How will we survive on earth? How can we colonise space? Will we ever be able to go beyond the Solar System?. For both the scientific and the intellectually curious, this book celebrates the mind, humour, and achievements of one of the most inspiring figures in recent history. The book will include an afterword from Lucy Hawking and a percentage of all royalties will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Stephen Hawking Foundation.

  • Waterstones God and Stephen Hawking 2ND EDITION

    Price: £9.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: It is a grandiose claim to have banished God. With such a lot at stake we surely need to ask Hawking to produce evidence to establish his claim. Do his arguments really stand up to close scrutiny? I think we have a right to know. The Grand Design and Brief Answers to Big Questions by eminent scientist the late Stephen Hawking were blockbusting contributions to the science religion debate. They claimed it was the laws of physics themselves which brought the universe into being, rather than any God. In this forthright response, John Lennox, Oxford University mathematician and internationally-known apologist, takes a closer look at Hawking's logic and questions his conclusions. In lively, layman's terms, Lennox guides us through the key points in Hawking's arguments - with clear explanations of the latest scientific and philosophical methods and theories - and demonstrates that far from disproving a Creator God, they make his existence seem all the more probable. Description: Stephen Hawking's closest collaborator offers the intellectual superstar's final thoughts on the cosmos - a dramatic revision of the theory he put forward in A Brief History of Time. Perhaps the biggest question Stephen Hawking tried to answer in his extraordinary life was how the universe could have created conditions so perfectly hospitable to life. In order to solve this mystery, Hawking studied the big bang origin of the universe, but his early work ran into a crisis when the math predicted many big bangs producing a multiverse - countless different universes, most of which would be far too bizarre to ?harbour life. Holed up in the theoretical physics department at Cambridge, Stephen Hawking and his friend and collaborator Thomas Hertog worked on this problem for twenty years, developing a new theory of the cosmos that could account for the emergence of life. Peering into the extreme quantum physics of cosmic holograms and venturing far back in time, they were startled to find a deeper level of evolution in which the physical laws themselves transform and simplify until particles, forces, and even time itself fades away. This discovery led them to a revolutionary idea: The laws of physics are not set in stone but are born and co-evolve as the universe they govern takes shape. As Hawking's final days drew near, the two collaborators published their theory, which proposed a radical new Darwinian perspective on the origins of our universe. On the Origin of Time offers a striking new vision of the universe's birth that will profoundly transform the way we think about our place in the order of the cosmos and may ultimately prove to be Hawking's greatest legacy.
