Review: The 16th and most commercially successful Goosebumps book. It has spawned 3 sequels, 2 computer games, 1 board game and an entire spin off seriesarc. But this isn't the best Goosebumps book, (not even top ten material). This story is a case of a genius idea that fails to be executed (pardon the pun). The set up is fun, 3 kids wonder around a horror theme park, each ride scarier than the other which at some point suggest certain death. R.L. Stine really captures that excitement, anticipation and fear all kids get on scary rides, he has fun building the tension before repeatedly releasing it, but soon this becomes very episodic. The climatic battle in a room of assorted monsters is thrilling yet rushed, the twist is strange (a nod to reality shows before they had become so popular) and the ending which adds a pinch of poetic comedy and then some really spoils what could have been up there with children's classics such as charlie and the chocolate factory. The book lacks scares and twists but makes up for it with a monster of an idea that would grow over the series and lead to the best 2 books Goosebumps has produced (escape horrorland & the streets of panic park) SCARES 410 DEATHS: 0. no one REALLY dies at horroland (do they?) MONSTERS: 100s horrors + a zoo full of many monsters VERDICT 45: Not quite the rollercoaster of fear it suggests, its more like the big wheel, it will raise you up only to take you straight back down, it doesn't really go any where apart from round in circles but most will just enjoy the ride. The ending will leave you deflated but you might just want to return (you've got free passes)
