Review: I loved all these books when I was young (bit strange for a girl to like them maybe? Maybe not) so I was pleased when my son brought one home from his primary school library. I had no idea that Willard Price was so prolific though - I think I only read perhaps five of his books when I was young and thought then that I'd worked my way through his entire catalogue. Thanks to Amazon, I now know that in fact if there's an animal in the jungle that Willard HASN'T written a book about, it must be feeling miffed. Slow Loris Adventure anyone? Whatever, my son is very happy to have such a rich source of reading matter and is happily working his way through them all. Beware: some of the language is decidely non-PC and could be deemed offensive. It's up to you to decide whether or not your child can identify anything inappropriate, also whether it will spoil his/her enjoyment of these stories.

  • Waterstones The Boy and the Gorilla

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This profoundly moving tale about a grieving boy and an imaginary gorilla makes real the power of talking about loss. On the day of his mother's funeral, a young boy conjures the very visitor he needs to see - a gorilla. Wise and gentle, the gorilla stays on to answer the heart-heavy questions the boy hesitates to ask his father: Where did his mother go? Will she come back home? Will we all die? Yet with the gorilla's friendship, the boy slowly begins to discover moments of comfort in tending flowers, playing catch and climbing trees. Most of all, the gorilla knows that it helps to simply talk about the loss - especially with those who share your grief and who may feel alone too. Author Jackie Azúa Kramer's quietly thoughtful text and illustrator Cindy Derby's beautiful impressionistic artwork depict how this tender relationship leads the boy to open up to his father and find a path forward. Told entirely in dialogue, this direct and deeply affecting picture book will inspire conversations about grief, empathy, and healing beyond the final hope-filled scene. Description: Jonna lives in an orphanage whose manager is strict and obsessed with cleanliness. Like all the other children, Jonna has only one dream: to be adopted by a well-dressed mother who smells of perfume. But one day, a beat-up old car pulls up. The door opens and out step two thick hairy legs with muddy boots, followed by a belly as round as a barrel, and finally, a head like an overgrown pear. It's a gorilla! Surely the orphanage won't let a gorilla adopt a child. But, to Jonna's horror, the gorilla chooses her. Jonna sleeps in a hammock, and in the evenings the gorilla reads Dickens in her worn armchair. It turns out Jonna and the gorilla have a lot in common. But just when they've started to get along, a man from the council threatens to send Jonna back to the orphanage.
