Review: Loved this book! At first I was not sure whether to read it as it was written in the 60's so thought the info would be out of date etc but how wrong I was. Dian Fossey gave her life to the conservation of gorillas and I really related to her in this book. I think it is amazing what she did and how she managed to habituate the mountain gorillas as well as her struggle with rescued orphans. I found this book truly inspirational and anyone with an interest in apes and conservation will love this. I have since bought the National Geographic DVD that accompanies this book. This book was written by Dian Fossey 2 years before she was killed so it is a complete book and doesn't end abruptly. I enjoyed this book slightly more than 'In the Shadow of man' by Jane Goodall just because of the way it was written I just seemed to engage with Dian Fossey slightly more and I have the same views as her that all animals should be wild and free and never kept in cages. Zoos can never provide what freedom and the wild can. Highly recommended!

Review: This is a cheap copy of this book. The fonts used are virtually unreadable. The photographs are very poor photocopies. I have never been so disappointed in a book. It was intended as a present for my granddaughter but it is so bad I will not be giving it to her.

Description: Now into its eighth edition and written by Philip Briggs, the world's leading author of African guidebooks, Bradt's Rwanda has been the go-to guide for visitors to the 'Land of a Thousand Hills' for more than 20 years. Still the only standalone guide in English to this increasingly popular destination, it remains in a class of its own for in-depth information. With fresh research into developments across the country, Bradt's Rwanda includes expanded coverage of Gishwati-Mukura National Park, which opened to tourism in 2021, and up-to-date details of rapidly modernising Kigali, considered Africa's cleanest city. Rwanda continues to change and develop at an unprecedented pace - no country has a higher proportion of female parliamentarians - and there's hardly a more accessible part of Africa. It's no less intriguing for the convenience, however, and Rwanda's superlative natural attractions constantly improve, with growing animal populations, as in Akagera National Park, where Africa's Big Five (rhino, lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo) can be seen. This new edition also includes extensive maps and natural history information, while details of kayak and canoe excursions on Lake Kivu and the Mukungwa River complement advice about staying on tea plantations at Sorwathe or Gisovu. It contains everything you need to know about tracking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park (workplace of primatologist Dian Fossey of Gorillas in the Mist fame) and chimpanzees in Nyungwe National Park (East Africa's largest surviving montane forest, harbouring numerous endemic birds and primates) and Gishwati-Mukura (which is also the only location for the rare golden monkey outside the Virunga mountains). Also covered are Nyanza, with its hilltop Rukari King's Palace Museum, and the Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda, the top cultural site in Butare (Huye). A chapter on nearby cities and national parks provides key necessary information to take an excursion into neighbouring DRC, including how to see lowland gorillas. As not only the most in-depth guide available in English, but also the guide with the longest history in the country itself, Bradt's Rwanda is the indispensable companion for visitors, including wildlife enthusiasts and Africa aficionados.

Description: An Inspiring Memoir, for Fans of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Frans De Waal. In her enchanting memoir, Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, Uganda's first wildlife veterinarian, tells the remarkable story from her animal-loving childhood to her career protecting endangered mountain gorillas and other wild animals. She is also the defender of people as a groundbreaking promoter of human public health and an advocate for revolutionary integrated approaches to saving our planet. In an increasingly interconnected world, animal and human health alike depend on sustainable solutions and Dr. Gladys has developed an innovative approach to conservation among the endangered Mountain Gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and their human neighbors. Walking with Gorillas takes the reader on an incredible personal journey with Dr. Gladys, from her early days as a student in Uganda, enduring the assassination of her father during civil war, to her veterinarian education in England to establishing the first veterinary department for the Ugandan government to founding one of the first organizations in the world that enables people to coexist with wildlife through improving the health and wellbeing of both. Her award-winning approach reduced the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on critically endangered mountain gorillas. In the face of discrimination and a male dominated world, one woman's passion and determination to build a brighter future for the local wildlife and human community offers inspiration and insights into what is truly possible for our planet when we come together. Her story is amazing and I recommend this book to everyone interested in conservation, alleviating poverty, and the role of women in society. But perhaps most importantly it is a truly inspiring story of how one determined and dedicated woman overcame many setbacks and faced many dangers to follow and realize her dream. She has made a huge difference to conservation in Uganda and she is an inspiring example to young | ??and not so young | ??people everywhere. -- Jane Goodall, Ph D, DBE and UN Messenger of Peace, from the foreword . Price: £22.50

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A unique, beautifully illustrated exploration of our fascination with our closest primate relatives, and the development of primatology as a discipline This insightful work is a compact but wide-ranging survey of humankind's relationship to the great apes (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans), from antiquity to the present. Replete with fascinating historical details and anecdotes, it traces twists and turns in our construction of primate knowledge over five hundred years. Chris Herzfeld outlines the development of primatology and its key players and events, including well-known long-term field studies, notably the pioneering work by women such as Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas. Herzfeld seeks to heighten our understanding of great apes and the many ways they are like us. The reader will encounter apes living in human families, painting apes, apes who use American Sign Language, and chimpanzees who travelled in space. A philosopher and historian specializing in primatology, Herzfeld offers thought-provoking insights about our perceptions of apes, as well as the boundary between 'human" and 'ape" and what it means to be either.
