Review: This is a useful beginner’s book for people looking to create a garden in a small space. The book doesn’t just look at traditional garden plots: its scope includes courtyards, balconies, roof terraces, and even window boxes. The message here is that in even the smallest space there’s scope for something resembling a garden. I liked the fact that this book didn’t shy from the fact that a garden consisting of potted plants in a courtyard might require more maintenance than a traditional garden (e.g. the need for greater watering), and gives consideration to less traditional design approaches such as the use of artificial lawn alongside chamomile, creeping thyme, and other low/no mow options rather than just traditional grass. The book looks at various aspects of design - including soft and hard landscaping, use of different materials, adding water features, storage, and furniture, borders, beds, herb borders, growing food crops, flowers, and trees, and lighting - as well as giving an overview of the characteristics of some types of trees and plants. There is even a section on how to plant a tree. The final section deals (briefly) with maintenance and topics encompassing weeding, feeding, pest prevention, pest control, and disease control. A good, general overview and starting point.
