Description: Beans are easy to grow, easy to cook, delicious, nourishing and beneficial for us and the planet. Growing your own beans not only helps you build healthy soil in your garden, it also provides you with a nutrient-rich diet. Beans can play a role in reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer - they are good sources of protein, fibre, folate, iron and potassium - and they can reduce your carbon footprint and food miles as well! This fascinating book brings together Susan Young's 10 years of experimentation with multiple varieties of beans. She clearly explains how to sow, grow, harvest, dry, store and cook them, and shares her six 'must grow' varieties. Go on a tasty culinary journey around the world and discover a range of colourful and historic beans, from the pink 'Fagiolo di Lamon' of Italy to the black and white 'Bosnian Pole' bean. Learn which varieties are best for eating fresh from the pod and those that are best for drying and storing for later use. Beans offer year-round nutritious meals, and dried beans can be the star of the show with their fabulous diversity of flavours, colours and textures. Review: This book is a wealth of knowledge and information about growing interesting and tasty beans in the U.K.. I particularly like the relaxed approach of the author and found her ‘can do’ attitude very encouraging. As well as practical guidance for growing a range of beans there is lots of background about the history of bean growing and why we should be growing beans as we look towards creating a sustainable future. Highly recommended!

Review: Spoiler alert - grow Borlotti beans or Greek Gigante beans in the UK, other beans are difficult to grow or rare. End of Book. As I already know this and grow both of these beans, the rather short book at rather a high price was not much use to me. I suppose bean growing is a niche area and I should have expected a rather slim volume. But this was really poor value for money, and would be far better just to google the subject. Sorry to be so harsh but I frankly learnt nothing new and read this book in a short hour or so one afternoon.

Description: How on earth did 'with bells on' come to express enthusiasm? What do chips on shoulders have to do with inferiority complexes?. And who is the face that launched a thousand ships? Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pyjamas provides us with the meanings of these well-worn and much-loved phrases by putting these linguistic quirks in context, and explaining how and why they were first used. For example, did you know that 'the rule of thumb' refers to the use of the thumb to make measurements, as the first joint of the average adult thumb measures one inch? Absorbing, diverting and fascinating - as far as gift books go, Spilling the Beans really is the bee's knees!.
