Description: Born at the end of the 19th century, Donald Healey was a Cornishman from Perranporth who made a major impact on motoring, motor sport and the motor industry. In the 1920s and 1930s he became a national hero for his successes in motor rallies, taking numerous prizes in European rallies and even winning the Monte Carlo rally in 1932 in a 41/2 Litre Invicta. In that same decade he was lured to Triumph, for whom he designed a successful and nicely styled new range of models as well as the wonderful but ill-fated 8-cylinder supercharged Dolomite. After the Second World War he brought his lifetime ambition to fruition by launching the Healey motor car, starting with the Westland Tourer and the Elliot Saloon, which were the fastest road cars of their time, followed by the Tickford saloon and the stark Silverstone roadster. But he didn't stop there: his next coup was the Healey 100, a prototype of which the boss of Austin saw on the Healey stand at Earls Court and immediately pounced on, making a deal with Healey that would result in the Austin-Healey 100, manufactured and sold by Austin. The rest is history, with the immortal 100 developed into the 100/6 and the 3000, and alongside them the perky Austin-Healey Sprite. This book is a comprehensive history of the life and work of Donald Healey, in business, in dealings with customers and colleagues, as a competitor in motor sport, and as a car designer and manufacturer, written by an American devotee of British sports cars whose indefatigable research has turned up many new stories and countless previously unseen photographs, all with the collaboration of the Healey family.

Description: Born in 1952, the Austin-Healey 100 soon took the UK and US markets by storm. A beautiful, brutish car, it was what many sporting motorists had been waiting for, and at a relatively affordable price. Following the 100, was the 3000 - a car as successful on the rally stage as it was loved on the open road, and the Sprite - which recreated the market for the cheap 'everyman's' sports car. Graham Robson, an authority on the British motor industry, presents a concise history of Austin-Healey, and the marque's success on road and track. Illustrated throughout, it is an ideal introduction for all lovers of this quintessentially British sports car.

  • Waterstones Caring for Place

    Price: £35.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This book draws on preeminent planning theorist Patsy Healey's personal experiences as a resident of a small rural town in England, to explore what place and community mean in a particular context, and how different initiatives struggle to get a stake in the wider governance relations while maintaining their own focus and ways of working. Throughout the book, Healey assesses the public value generated by community initiatives and the impact of such activity on wider governance dynamics. Healey explores the power which small communities are able to mobilise through self-organisation and grassroots activism. Through the lens of Wooler and Glendale as a micro-society, the book centres on a community experiencing an economic and demographic transition. It focuses on three initiatives developed and led by local people - a small community development trust, an informal attentionmobilising network, and a Neighbourhood Plan project which uses an opportunity provided within the formal planning system. It examines how, in such civil society activism, people came together to promote local development in a place and community neglected by the dominant political economy. The book details the power and force of community initiative and its potential for transforming both the future possibilities for the place and community itself, as well as wider governance relations. Overall, it seeks to enrich academic and policy discussion about how the relations between formal government and civil society energy could evolve in more productive and progressive directions.
